Sheepdog Theatre is looking for a
Japanese Translator & Proofreader (Volunteer)
to support our communications and audience outreach in Tokyo.
This role is for someone with strong Japanese writing skills who enjoys theatre and wants to help shape how our work is presented across
social media, our website, marketing materials, and Japanese subtitles
for English-language productions.
About the role
Working closely with the Production Coordinator and creative team, you'll help ensure our Japanese-language materials are
natural, audience-friendly, and culturally accurate
, especially when translating theatrical tone, humor, and nuance.
We're particularly interested in someone familiar with
both Western and Japanese theatre contexts
, and who understands how language choices shift depending on platform (flyer vs. website vs. subtitles).
Responsibilities
- Translate and proofread Japanese text for: social media posts and captions
- Website copy and announcements
- Flyers, posters, and marketing/press materials
- Subtitles for English-language live performance and video clips (and occasional full-length reference videos)
- Adapt phrasing for clarity, tone, and cultural context (not just literal translation)
- Maintain consistency of style, terminology, and names across materials
- Light coordination with the team to confirm intent and meaning when needed
Qualifications
- Native or near-native Japanese writing ability (with strong proofreading/editing skills)
- Experience translating or proofreading content (portfolio/examples appreciated)
- Interest in theatre; familiarity with Western and Japanese theatre settings preferred
- Reliable communication and ability to meet agreed deadlines
- Comfortable working collaboratively and receiving feedback
