We're looking for a Backend Tech Lead to guide a small, highly capable backend team (around 6 engineers) building real-time, production systems used by thousands of users.
This is a hands-on leadership role.You'll still write code, but your biggest impact will come from technical decision-making, mentoring, code reviews, pairing, and improving how the team works together.
What You'll DoLead and mentor a backend engineering team of ~6 engineers
Take ownership of day-to-day technical direction and quality
Make architectural and technical decisions collaboratively
Pair-program and conduct thoughtful, high-quality code reviews
Write backend code for new features and system improvements
Improve onboarding, documentation, and overall developer experience
Identify and solve process, communication, and collaboration issues
Work closely with an Engineering Manager on priorities and execution
What we are looking for
Senior-level backend engineering experience (still hands-on)
Strong experience with Go or similar backend languages
Experience mentoring or leading engineers (formal or informal)
Comfortable discussing technical topics in Japanese
Native Japanese OR conversational Japanese with technical vocabulary
Currently based in Japan and able to come to the Tokyo office once per week
Proactive communicator who surfaces problems and proposes solutions
Nice to Have
Experience with real-time systems, streaming, or low-latency architectures
Familiarity with gRPC, NATS, or similar technologies
Experience building systems with tens of thousands of daily users
Track record of improving team processes, documentation, or developer tooling
