Job Summary:
The Director of Finance and Operations will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for ensuring financial integrity and operational excellence across the organization.
This role oversees Finance, IT, Client Services, and Office Administration, ensuring that the company operates efficiently, compliantly, and sustainably as it continues to grow.
You will work closely with the leadership team and service line leaders to strengthen financial systems, streamline business operations, and support cross-departmental collaboration.
Typically, this person will be working at the Tokyo Academics office in Nishiazabu, during our regular business hours (10 AM – 7 PM Japan Standard Time) and may need to make off-site visits to schools, vendors, and partners.
What you will work on:
Oversee the company's financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow monitoring, and internal controls
Ensure compliance with Japanese accounting, tax, and labor regulations
Collaborate with external accountants, auditors, and advisors for statutory filings and audits
Partner with the leadership team to develop and monitor financial KPIs and dashboards to support data-driven decision-making
Optimize financial processes and tools for accuracy, transparency, and efficiency
Oversee IT systems and infrastructure to ensure reliability, data security, and scalability
Lead operational improvement initiatives to strengthen coordination between departments and streamline workflows
Oversee Client Services operations to ensure a consistently high-quality experience for students and families, maintaining service excellence and responsiveness
Oversee office administration, including procurement, facilities, and vendor management
Support strategic planning and cross-functional projects in collaboration with other department heads
Foster collaboration between Japan-based and international teams to ensure smooth operations
Our ideal candidate has:
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (CPA or equivalent certification would be an advantage)
At least 8 years of professional experience in finance or operations, including experience in Japan finance and accounting practices
At least 5 years of leadership experience with proven success managing teams or multi-department functions
Strong understanding of Japanese financial regulations, tax systems, and compliance requirements
Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead, guide, and coordinate the work of multiple divisions
Fluent English proficiency
Japanese proficiency (would be an advantage)
Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities with a focus on execution
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
