Head of Finance, Japan

The Head of Finance, Japan will be a strategic partner to the country head and group, driving financial leadership across the business. This role combines enterprise-level oversight with hands-on expertise, enabling growth, ensuring compliance, and shaping commercial decisions. As a key member of the leadership team, the incumbent will influence strategy, lead cross-functional initiatives, and build financial capabilities to support the business expansion in Japan. The incumbent will lead the Finance organization that includes Operations Finance, Strategic Finance and Capital Management functions.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership

• Act as a trusted advisor to the country head and group, contributing to strategic planning and capital allocation decisions.
• Lead financial and capital management strategy to support long-term growth and value creation.
• Represent Finance in cross-functional leadership forums, influencing business outcomes beyond the finance domain.

Enterprise Stewardship & Governance

• Champion financial discipline, risk management, and compliance across the Japan business.
• Ensure alignment with group-wide policies, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards.
• Oversee relationships with external auditors, tax authorities, and financial institutions.

Performance Management & Commercial Insight

• Drive business performance through data-driven insights, scenario planning, and proactive financial analysis.
• Shape pricing, portfolio optimization, and operational efficiency initiatives in collaboration with commercial and operations teams.
• Lead strategic projects including M&A, new developments, and digital transformation efforts.

Functional Expertise & Hands-On Support

• Provide technical guidance on complex accounting, tax, and reporting matters as needed.
• Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with J-GAAP and IFRS.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and capital management activities with precision and agility.

Leadership & Talent Development

• Build and inspire a high-performing finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Mentor finance professionals and develop succession plans to support long-term capability building.
• Promote collaboration across functions and geographies, contributing to a cohesive group finance community.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive finance experience, including senior leadership and change management roles in Japan.
• Proven ability to lead in a matrixed, fast-paced, and growth-oriented environment.
• Deep understanding of Japanese financial regulations, tax laws, and business culture.
• Strong communication skills in Japanese and English, with the ability to influence at all levels.
• Experience in real estate, retail, or asset-heavy industries is a plus.
