Moon is hiring a
Staff Accountant (Contract)
who will be responsible for managing the daily finance and accounting operations of our studios. As part of the Operations & Finance team, you will work closely not only with team members but also with outside specialists to support the operations of Moon's Palo Alto and Tokyo studios.
In this role, you will leverage your experience, skills, and mindset to work across multiple teams and help achieve our mission and ambitious growth objectives. While based at Moon's Tokyo studio, you will collaborate with Japanese vendors, colleagues from our parent company Mitsui & Co., as well as Moon project teams and contacts in the U.S. and other countries.
- This is a contract role. The duration of the initial contract is 6 months, with a potential extension depending on team needs and individual performance.
What You'll Do At Moon
Finance & Accounting Operations
- Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with company policies and accounting standards (J-GAAP, US GAAP, IFRS, etc.)
- Record transactions, input journal entries, and reconcile accounts
- Manage accounts payable and receivable (invoice verification, payment and collection processing), and expense reimbursements
- Oversee cash flow management and bank reconciliation
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports
- Support budget vs. actual tracking, variance analysis, and management reporting
- Assist in audit and tax filings (including material preparation and schedule coordination)
Other Responsibilities
- Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Support the development and implementation of internal controls
- Handle ad-hoc tasks and financial analysis as required
The Must-Haves
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
- 3+ years of professional experience in accounting or finance
- Hands-on experience with daily accounting operations (bookkeeping, expense reimbursement, payment processing, etc.)
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
- Business-level English (speaking, reading, and writing)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in Japanese
- Ability to work proactively, manage tasks independently, and thrive in a fast-changing, ambiguous environment
The Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with accounting software such as freee, QuickBooks, or expense reimbursement tools like Expensify
- Accounting qualifications such as Japan Bookkeeping Level 2, CPA (Japan or US)
- Knowledge of J-GAAP and IFRS standards
- Work experience at a subsidiary of a Japanese company
- Experience working in multicultural teams
- Experience in startup environments with shifting priorities
