Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and consumer-obsessed Head of Merchandising to lead and scale the merchandising function for Owndays Japan. This individual will be responsible for owning product strategy, assortment planning, inventory management, pricing, and visual merchandising for the Japan market—while aligning with the global merchandising vision of Lenskart Group.

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the right products reach the right stores and customers at the right time—balancing customer insight, business metrics, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Merchandising Strategy & Assortment Planning

  • Define and execute merchandising strategy tailored to Japanese consumer preferences and market trends

  • Build assortment plans across core, seasonal, and innovation-led eyewear collections

  • Balance global brand consistency with local relevance in product offering

2. Buying & Product Lifecycle Management

  • Lead buying for private labels, licensed collaborations, and new category introductions

  • Manage product lifecycle from launch to markdown, ensuring sell-through and freshness

  • Identify and drive opportunities in growing segments (e.g., blue-light, kids, progressive lenses)

3. Pricing & Promotions

  • Develop Japan-specific pricing architecture aligned with brand positioning and financial goals

  • Plan and execute promotional campaigns in partnership with marketing and retail teams

  • Monitor competitor pricing and adjust strategies to maintain competitiveness

4. Inventory Planning & Demand Forecasting

  • Lead OTB planning and stock allocation in collaboration with supply chain

  • Forecast demand and optimize inventory turns and availability across store formats and online

  • Identify slow-moving SKUs and implement corrective actions

5. Visual Merchandising

  • Develop visual merchandising strategy in alignment with store design and brand guidelines

  • Collaborate with store operations and design teams to ensure consistent in-store experience

  • Use store analytics and customer journey data to refine planograms and displays

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with country leadership, supply chain, marketing, and product design teams

  • Align with global merchandising and category leadership on assortment, innovation, and pricing strategy

  • Share local insights to influence global product roadmaps

7. Team Leadership

  • Build, manage, and mentor a high-performing merchandising team in Japan

  • Drive team capability in analytics, planning, category thinking, and cross-functional execution

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • 10–15 years of experience in merchandising, category management, or product planning in Japan

  • Prior experience in D2C retail, fashion, lifestyle, or eyewear industry is preferred

  • Strong analytical mindset with a deep understanding of Japanese consumer behavior

  • Experience managing end-to-end merchandising functions, including buying, pricing, VM, and planning

  • Strong business acumen and commercial thinking

  • Collaborative leader who can influence across functions and geographies

  • Proven ability to adapt global strategies to fit local market needs

Language & Communication Skills:

  • Fluent in Japanese (native or near-native proficiency)

  • Business-level English to collaborate with Lenskart Group's global teams
