DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Director, Human Resources – Japan is a strategic HR leader responsible for driving the people agenda across Thermo Fisher Scientific's Japan operations. This role partners closely with senior business leaders to align human resources strategies with business objectives, ensuring organizational effectiveness, talent excellence, and a strong, compliant, and inclusive workplace culture. The position leads the Japan HR organization and serves as a key member of the Japan leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to Japan executive leadership on all people-related matters, including organizational design, workforce planning, succession planning, and change management.
  • Translate global and regional HR strategies into locally relevant initiatives aligned with Japan business priorities.
  • Actively contribute to business strategy discussions as a member of the Japan leadership team.

HR Operations & Governance

  • Oversee all core HR functions in Japan, including talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation & benefits, learning & development, performance management, and HR operations.
  • Ensure full compliance with Japanese labor laws, regulations, and internal company policies.
  • Manage relationships with labor unions and external stakeholders as required.

Talent & Culture

  • Drive talent management strategies to attract, develop, and retain top talent in a competitive market.
  • Champion leadership development, diversity, equity & inclusion (DE&I), and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Foster a high-performance culture aligned with Thermo Fisher Scientific's 4iValues and leadership expectations.

Change & Transformation

  • Lead HR aspects of business transformation initiatives, including M&A integration, restructuring, and organizational change.
  • Support leaders and employees through change with clear communication, capability building, and risk mitigation.

People & Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Japan HR leadership team and HR organization consists of 6 HR partners, 3 Talent Acquisition members and 5 Colleague Services members.
  • Build strong collaboration across regional and global HR teams to share best practices and ensure consistency.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree or MBA preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive HR experience, including senior leadership roles in multinational organizations.
  • Strong experience operating in Japan with deep knowledge of Japanese labor law and HR practices.
  • Proven ability to partner with senior executives and influence at the leadership level.

  • Strategic mindset with strong business acumen.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience leading complex change and transformation initiatives.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed, global organization.

Language

  • Fluency in Japanese (native-level) and English (business-level or above) required.
