The Role
As our new Compliance Officer in Japan, you'll join an open, knowledge-driven culture where everyone can thrive, connect with colleagues, learn, and grow. You will play a crucial role in driving our company's expansion strategy in the Japanese market, ensuring full compliance with all relevant financial, AML (Anti-Money Laundering), and CTF (Counter-Terrorist Financing) regulations. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and deep understanding of Japanese banking and payment regulations, AML/CTF laws, and local compliance frameworks
In addition, you will be the key person responsible for leading the application process for Japan's fintech licenses, including Funds Transfer Service Provider (資金移動業) and Electronic Payment Service Provider (電子決済代行業) registrations. You will report directly to the Head of Compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify the key laws, rules, and standards applicable to Hello Clever's business operations in Japan.
- Assess and monitor compliance risks associated with Hello Clever's Japan business and its expansion into new activities, products, or business relationships.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Compliance and AML/CTF policies and procedures for Japan, ensuring that Hello Clever's programs align with all relevant Japanese regulations.
- Lead the application, maintenance, and renewal of required fintech licenses, including Funds Transfer Service Provider (資金移動業) and Electronic Payment Service Provider (電子決済代行業) registrations.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulators on all matters related to licensing, compliance, AML/CTF, and regulatory audits, ensuring timely and accurate submissions of reports and filings.
- Conduct regular Compliance Risk Assessments and verify Hello Clever's adherence to Japan-specific compliance policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate closely with the first-line Business AML Operations team to review, assess, and resolve customer and transaction-related escalations.
- Serve as the main point of contact for AML/CTF inquiries and investigations; report suspicious activities to relevant authorities and maintain proper documentation.
- Prepare and present reports on Japan Compliance and AML/CTF matters to senior management, compliance risk committees, and the board as needed.
- Lead the rollout and continuous management of Japan-specific Compliance and AML/CTF training programs across the organization.
About You
- Minimum
3 years of experience
in
Compliance, AML/CTF or KYC Analyst
, preferably within the
payments related fintech sector
. - Possession of professional certifications such as
CAMS
or
CFCS
is highly desirable. - Strong knowledge of
banking, fintech, and payments regulations
, as well as
AML/CTF laws
, compliance systems, and best practices in
Japan and internationally
. - Proven ability to
interpret complex regulatory requirements
and
design practical, compliant solutions
. - Strong
analytical and problem-solving skills
with a detail-oriented and proactive mindset. - Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills
to interact effectively with internal teams, regulators, and external partners. - A
collaborative team player
who thrives in a
fast-paced, dynamic environment
. - Deep understanding of
Japanese business culture and regulatory landscape
. - Fluency in both English and Japanese
is required. - Experience with
license application processes
(e.g., 資金移動業, 電子決済代行業) and
regulatory audits
is a strong advantage.
