We are seeking a Wardrobe Supervisor / Costume Designer (Intern/Volunteer) for our November–December 2026 production of Much Ado About Nothing in Tokyo.
This role is ideal for someone with sewing abilities and an interest in costume design, garment construction, or theatre production who wants hands-on experience, creative responsibility, and leadership development.
The costume concepts will be developed by the Director and Producer, and you will work closely with them to refine the details, prepare sketches, and turn the overall vision into practical, buildable designs.
All costumes for this production will be handmade, and you will lead the creation process with support from a small costume team.
In addition, you will prepare placeholder costumes early in the process for marketing materials, photoshoots, and rehearsals, helping actors begin to inhabit their characters from the outset.
For candidates with relevant experience, a nominal completion fee may be discussed.
Working period
Initial concept discussions are underway.
Detailed design development and costume construction will begin after cast confirmation in January 2026.
Schedule is flexible and can be arranged around your availability.
Responsibilities
Work with the director and producer to refine costume concepts and produce sketches or design details
Lead the creation of handmade costumes for the production
Construct garments (cutting, sewing, assembling, finishing) using provided materials and equipment
Create placeholder costumes for early rehearsals and marketing/PR shoots
Supervise and guide a small costume team assisting with sewing and preparation
Conduct fittings, take measurements, and manage alterations
Maintain, repair, and organize costumes throughout rehearsals and performances
Track costume plots, quick changes, and wardrobe logistics
Keep the costume workspace organized and maintain a materials inventory
Support costume needs during promotional photography or video sessions
Qualifications
Sewing skills required (machine sewing and/or hand sewing)
Ability to construct garments, alter clothing, or work from patterns
Strong organisation and attention to detail
Creative interest in costume design, garment construction, or theatre production
Ability to collaborate closely with director/producer on design execution
Comfortable leading a small team (or eager to develop leadership skills)
Good communication and interpersonal abilities
Tokyo-based or able to commute
No professional experience required — training provided
