Overview
An international energy trading organization is seeking a Senior Compliance Advisor to support its Japan business, with a primary focus on the power trading and supply market. This role sits within the Asia Compliance function and serves as a key advisor to the Japan business on regulatory and compliance matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory and compliance advice for the Japan energy trading business
- Maintain constructive relationships with relevant regulators, exchanges, and market authorities
- Provide guidance on local regulatory requirements, licensing conditions, and compliance obligations related to power trading
- Ensure adherence to applicable rules and reporting requirements across relevant industry bodies and regulators
- Advise on internal codes of conduct, ethics policies, and compliance standards
- Support compliance risk assessments, investigations, and issue escalation where required
- Assist with the development and delivery of compliance training programs
- Monitor regulatory developments impacting the Japan power market and proactively advise the business
- Participate in leadership meetings and act as a trusted compliance business partner
- Promote a strong culture of ethics, integrity, and "doing the right thing" within the organization
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Strong understanding of regulatory and compliance frameworks relevant to trading activities in Japan
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the confidence to challenge and advise senior management
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with regional and global teams
- Fluency in Japanese and English (native-level Japanese required)
Preferred Qualifications
- 5–10+ years of experience in trading compliance, governance, audit, or a related risk role
- Experience or strong knowledge of the Japan electricity or energy trading market
- Understanding of trading instruments, strategies, and associated compliance risks
- Strong communication skills with the ability to deliver difficult messages effectively
- High personal integrity and a strong ethical mindset
