The EHS Manager for Japan is a strategic leadership position responsible for overseeing environmental, health and safety across all live data center construction projects in Japan. This role ensures compliance with Japanese regulations, promotes a proactive safety culture, and drives performance aligned with both local and international standards. The EHS Manager reports to the Head of EHS and collaborates closely with contractors, government agencies, and internal stakeholders.

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Develop and implement EHS strategies aligned with Japan's regulatory framework and organizational goals.

  • Lead the creation of policies and procedures that reflect Japan's Industrial Safety and Health Act (ISHA), COHSMS guidelines, and local ordinances.

  • Provide strategic EHS guidance to senior leadership and project teams.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure full compliance with Japanese laws including the Building Standards Act, Fire Service Act, and ISHA.

  • Conduct regular site audits and inspections to identify risks and ensure legal compliance.

  • Develop corrective action plans and risk mitigation strategies tailored to Japan's construction environment.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Oversee health, safety, and environmental training programs across all Japanese construction sites.

  • Promote safety awareness through culturally relevant engagement initiatives.

  • Implement programs focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and earthquake-resilient design.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Manage and mentor EHS teams in Japan, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

  • Build cross-functional collaboration with local and global teams.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain strong relationships with Japanese regulatory agencies, local communities, and industry groups.

  • Engage with contractors and subcontractors to ensure alignment with Japanese safety standards and expectations.

  • Support customer engagement through transparent communication and proactive safety management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field. Advanced certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, CSP, CIH) or Japanese equivalents preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in construction EHS management, ideally within Japan or APAC.

  • Deep understanding of Japanese EHS regulations and COHSMS.

  • Experience managing safety in high-risk environments and navigating Japan's regulatory landscape.

  • Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and strategic thinking skills.

  • Fluency in English and Japanese is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of Japanese EHS laws and construction safety practices.

  • Proficiency in EHS management systems and reporting tools.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management capabilities.

  • Ability to work effectively across cultures and departments.

  • Experience in ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

  • Willingness to travel across Japan to oversee multiple construction sites.

  • Ability to manage complex priorities under pressure.

  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with Japanese and global EHS developments.
