Job Description
We are seeking a Japan Investment Compliance Lead to accelerate our expansion plans in Japan. This is a pioneering opportunity to grow Wise in the region, enabling millions more potential customers to save money by using our services.
This is not your typical Compliance role. You will be responsible for registering us as a Type 1 Financial Instruments Business and contributing to the overall expansion in Japan alongside the banking & expansion team. You will have full responsibility for managing critical relationships with government departments and regulators. Through your work, you will have the ability to directly influence our Asset product capabilities in Japan.
You will be based in Tokyo and work with a global team of multidisciplinary specialists (Product, Treasury, Banking, Security) to help build world-class products for Japan. Your mission includes:
- Managing the licensing process end-to-end for a Type 1 Financial Instruments license registration, including preparing necessary documents, internal policies, and governance structure. This involves obtaining licenses under a Japan Asset entity (to be newly established), becoming a member of the Japan Securities Dealers Association, and other requirements.
- Collaborating with the global Assets product team on product launches, changes, and new features that impact our customers. You will serve as the team's go-to expert for regulatory knowledge and lead the early stages of implementing new Assets product features.
- Working with the banking team to understand existing and new regulations and determining how our product and setup can comply with them. We view regulation as an opportunity and want you to help us capitalize on it.
- BUILDING TRUST WITH OUR REGULATOR: Managing and coordinating meaningful reporting, responding to information requests, and proactively communicating product changes and notifiable events.
- Staying up-to-date with regulatory changes and providing input to government policy departments on the impact of proposed regulations.
This role offers opportunities to:

- Keep compliance at the forefront of product developments and new initiatives by horizon-scanning for new regulatory developments and sharing insights with the teams.
Requirements
- You should have a background in payments or financial regulation, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a strong motivation to succeed.
- Must be a Japanese native speaker residing in Japan and fluent in English.
- Experience in Type 1 Financial Instruments Business license business for at least 2-4 years, with a deep understanding of Financial Instruments Business regulation, governance requirements, and dynamics.
- Previous experience in regulation, licensing, or payments in a fast-paced professional environment is highly desirable.
- If you have experience in fund transfer service provider business, it would be an asset, but if not, you are willing to learn about it.
- Able to work independently, with a willingness to get hands-on and deliver results when needed.
- An analytical and critical thinker who can understand financial and securities regulations in a changing environment.
- Able to make pragmatic, risk-based decisions on how to implement regulations across various jurisdictions.

- You are willing to travel to our global offices as needed.
