Biological Field Station Assistant

Department:

FAES | Center for Lake Erie Area Research

Works under the direct supervision of the Stone Lab Manager to assist in preparation of seasonal programming at Stone Laboratory; assists in operation of Stone Laboratory Fieldtrip program, Science days at the South Bass Island Lighthouse and other outreach events; assists in preparation and maintenance of facilities for utilization by visitors, faculty, researchers and students; provides assistance to administrative and laboratory staff as needed; conducts inventory of supplies and equipment; maintains and repairs scientific equipment and occasionally assists with field research; leads scientific classroom activities for grades 5-12 school groups; leads tours, science cruises and activities for visiting groups; provides information about fieldtrip program; assists in construction and storage of educational displays; conducts orientation sessions for visiting groups; assists in seasonal set-up and close-down procedures for the laboratory; assists in all day-to-day operations including basic maintenance and dining and residence tasks as needed; performs special assignments as needed; position is a temporary appointment that will last spring to fall (flexible beginning and end dates based on availability); position located at Put-in-Bay, Ohio.

Minimum Education Required
High School diploma

Minimum Education Desired

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in life science education, fisheries & wildlife, ecology, biology or related field.

Required Qualifications
0 years of relevant experience; demonstrated ability in the conduct of routine field work; ability to work with a diverse population and as a team; valid driver's license; successful completion of a background check. Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and some holidays.

Desired Qualifications

Ability to lift 30 lbs. desired.

Applicants hired will be subject to a pre consortium drug screening upon hire and additional drug screenings if drawn through a random process throughout the season.

Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab are part of The Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 34 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources. Stone Lab is Ohio State's island campus on Lake Erie, offering year-round research, summer science courses and outreach programming.
