About Anthropic

Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

We're seeking an experienced Japan Developer Community Lead to establish and scale Anthropic's developer community in one of our most strategic international markets. As we drive Claude Code adoption and grow our Japanese developer ecosystem, you'll build vibrant, locally-relevant communities where Japanese developers can learn, collaborate, and push the boundaries of what's possible with AI.

In this full-time role, you'll own complete developer community strategy for Japan, including spearheading the creation of new community spaces for Japanese developers, launching an invite-only developer superuser program, leading local events and hackathon partnerships, and/or creating authentic Japanese-language engagement across key developer platforms. You'll partner closely with the Head of Japan to ensure community activities align with broader market strategy, while working closely with the US-based central Community team to standardize programs and build shared infrastructure.

This is a high-impact opportunity for someone who combines deep technical expertise with proven community building skills in the Japanese market, and who thrives in fast-paced environments where your work directly drives Claude Code growth, Pro/Max subscription conversion, and enterprise B2B pipeline development through developer advocacy.

This role is perfect for someone who is passionate about empowering Japanese developers to create innovative AI-powered applications in service of Anthropic's mission to develop safe and beneficial AI.

Responsibilities:

Japanese Developer Community Platform Leadership

  • Spearhead the creation of new, purpose-built community spaces for Japanese developers optimized for local preferences and needs
  • Establish and lead strategy for Japanese-language developer community platforms and engagement channels
  • Build vibrant community spaces where Japanese developers can learn, share, and collaborate on Claude-powered projects
  • Lead engagement on Japanese developer platforms (Qiita, Zenn, note, Twitter/X) to build Anthropic's presence in local technical discourse
  • Develop culturally-appropriate community guidelines and moderation standards

Japanese Developer Superuser Program

  • Design and launch invite-only developer superuser program focused on most innovative and dedicated Japanese developers
  • Identify and recruit exceptional Japanese developers building with Claude Code and Claude API
  • Create localized program structure that respects Japanese business culture while delivering high-value engagement
  • Establish measurement frameworks to track impact on Claude Code usage, Pro/Max subscriptions, and developer advocacy
  • Build pathways for Japanese superusers to influence product roadmap and become public advocates
  • Coordinate with US-based Community team on global superuser program standards

Local Events & Hackathon Leadership

  • Lead comprehensive local events program including Japan-based meetups, workshops, and developer conferences
  • Establish "events-in-a-box" program enabling Japanese developers to host local Claude events across Japan
  • Partner with major Japanese hackathon organizers to establish Claude Code presence and sponsorship
  • Coordinate with Japanese universities to establish student ambassador programs and campus events
  • Track event impact on Claude Code adoption and Pro/Max conversion metrics

Japanese Developer Communications & Content Strategy

  • Serve as primary voice of Anthropic to Japanese developer community through localized content and engagement
  • Create Japanese-language technical content including blog posts, tutorials, and use case guides
  • Translate and culturally adapt key developer resources for Japanese audience
  • Build relationships with Japanese technical media, developer influencers, and technology publications
  • Manage developer communications specific to Japanese market

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Market Coordination

  • Partner closely with Head of Japan to ensure community strategy supports broader market objectives
  • Work with US-based central Community team to standardize programs, share learnings, and build centralized infrastructure
  • Drive measurable growth in Claude Code active users, Pro/Max subscriptions, and enterprise pipeline within Japanese developer community
  • Surface valuable feedback and insights from Japanese developers to inform global product strategy

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Have 8+ years of developer relations or technical community management experience with focus on Japanese market
  • Possess native or near-native Japanese language proficiency and professional English proficiency
  • Demonstrate extensive hands-on coding experience with deep understanding of modern development workflows
  • Have experience with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar)
  • Excel at building developer communities from early stage specifically in Japanese market
  • Are passionate about AI technology and its potential to transform how Japanese developers build applications
  • Have proven track record of driving developer tool adoption, subscription growth, and enterprise pipeline development with measurable business impact
  • Maintain active presence in Japanese developer communities with evidence of technical contributions
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively across cultures and organizations, coordinating with local market leaders and central/global teams

Strong candidates may also have:

  • Developer relations leadership at international technology companies with Japanese market presence
  • Experience building and managing superuser/VIP programs for technical audiences in Japan
  • Background organizing or partnering with Japanese hackathons, developer conferences, and technical events
  • Understanding of Japanese university system and student developer community
  • Track record of creating Japanese-language technical content that resonates with local developers
  • Experience working with sales teams to convert developer relationships into enterprise opportunities
  • Data-driven approach to community building with focus on both B2C subscription metrics and B2B pipeline contribution
  • Cultural bridge-building abilities between Japanese market and global tech companies, with experience coordinating between local and central teams
  • Personal coding experience with active GitHub presence and engagement in Japanese technical communities

Logistics

Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed.  Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Come work with us

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
