Description
The incumbent is responsible for independently managing and executing certification projects, ensuring compliance with applicable safety requirements, national and international standards, and organizational quality systems. This role involves technical evaluation, product testing oversight, customer communication, and continuous improvement activities. The position requires strong technical expertise, project management capability, and the ability to work effectively with internal teams and clients.
Main Responsibilities:
Performance and Project Management
• Independently manage multiple certification projects concurrently, ensuring completion within established timeframes, budgets, and safety requirements.
• Evaluate products for compliance with applicable national and international standards and precedent decisions.
• Manage complex, high-revenue projects and deliver assignments within agreed timescales and cost parameters.
• Maintain productivity levels in line with company expectations.
• Demonstrate technical competence to review the work of others and perform witness testing per divisional quality procedures.
• Apply expertise in two or more product qualification areas.
• Review and verify test data, reports, and authorize the application of Certification Marks, Certification Reports, and Certificates of Compliance.
• Provide technical assistance to clients in resolving product issues or test failures while maintaining confidentiality.
• Keep management informed of project status, highlighting major issues, risks, or non-compliance.
• Evaluate and qualify companies participating in certification programs, reviewing test methods, systems, product designs, and documentation.
• Ensure test equipment and quality procedures align with company standards and provide technical briefings on new or revised requirements.
• Collaborate with Technical Advisors or Certification Specialists to promote consistency and best practices across certification activities.
• Provide technical information and guidance to internal and external customers throughout the product design and certification process.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Customer Relations
• Partner with sales teams to support existing clients and identify new business opportunities.
• Prepare accurate project quotations, including cost and time estimates.
• Classify products by use, environment, and function to determine applicable standards, tests, and evaluation methods.
• Advise clients on certification program options and production control requirements.
• Provide feedback to management and sales on client concerns or opportunities for service improvement.
• Serve as a liaison with clients during design and testing phases, ensuring understanding of requirements without compromising confidentiality.
Testing and Technical Execution
• Perform testing and evaluation activities in compliance with established divisional quality procedures.
• Prepare detailed laboratory work orders and documentation outlining applicable standards, test plans, data collection methods, and safety analyses.
• Guide laboratory personnel in test setup, execution, and data collection to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards.
• Demonstrate proficiency in conducting and witnessing common laboratory tests at company or client facilities.
• Interpret test data and results accurately, compiling comprehensive evaluation records and summaries with minimal supervision.
• Apply technical knowledge of standards and testing requirements across multiple product types.
• Conduct field testing and inspections at manufacturer locations as required.
Self-Development and Continuous Improvement
• Participate in internal audits to ensure compliance and technical competence.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation initiatives within the organization.
• Recommend new programs, testing methods, or equipment to expand laboratory capabilities.
• Generate ideas to enhance laboratory safety and operational efficiency.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national and international standards, technical documentation, and relevant publications.
• Share expertise by explaining applicable standards and procedures to colleagues and mentoring junior staff.
• Promote best practices in technical accuracy, safety, and quality throughout all certification.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and approximately 3 years of related experience; or
• Certified Engineering Technologist, Journeyman Electrician, or equivalent industry background with approximately 3 years of related experience.
• Knowledge of UL, IEC, and related international product standards.
• Familiarity with product testing methodologies and certification procedures.
• Strong technical communication skills with the ability to explain findings and results clearly to clients and colleagues.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and detail-oriented capabilities.
• Effective organizational, time management, and project coordination skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and technical report writing.
• Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, instruments, and tools.
