Senior Data Engineer – Digital Banking Platform (Tokyo / Hybrid)
A leading fintech company is partnering with a major Japanese financial group to launch a next-generation digital bank. As part of this initiative, we're building a modern, cloud-native data platform and are looking for a
Senior Data Engineer
to help shape its core foundations.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys designing scalable data systems, working close to the business, and operating in a regulated environment.
What You'll Do
- Design and build data pipelines ingesting data from multiple systems (batch & streaming)
- Develop and maintain Bronze / Silver / Gold transformations on a Databricks lakehouse
- Implement data quality checks, reconciliation logic, and monitoring
- Build and optimize SQL- and Python-based transformations (dbt or similar)
- Design data models for analytics, reporting, and regulatory use cases
- Contribute to architecture decisions for the data platform
- Optimize performance through partitioning, Z-ordering, and query tuning
- Implement CI/CD and infrastructure as code (Terraform)
- Collaborate with backend engineers on APIs and data schemas
- Lead initiatives within the data platform and mentor other engineers
- Document best practices and contribute to team standards
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics engineering
- Strong SQL and Python skills
- Hands-on experience with Databricks, Spark, dbt, or similar tools
- Experience working in AWS environments
- Solid understanding of data modeling (dimensional, data vault, event-driven)
- Experience with data quality validation and testing
- Familiarity with CI/CD, Git, and cloud-native development
- Ability to work independently and communicate clearly across teams
- Experience mentoring or reviewing code is a plus
Nice to Have
- Background in fintech, banking, or other regulated industries
- Experience with regulatory reporting or financial data reconciliation
- Streaming data pipelines (Kafka, Kinesis, etc.)
- REST API development (FastAPI, Flask)
- BI tools (QuickSight, Tableau, PowerBI, Looker)
- Terraform and cost/performance optimization experience
- Experience using AI tools to improve development workflows
