Technical Project Manager

AREA 35, Inc. is a Tokyo-based game development studio working primarily with Unreal Engine on console, PC, and real-time projects. We are seeking a Technical Project Manager (TPM) to support game productions with significant technical complexity, including engine-driven gameplay systems, content pipelines, and performance-critical features.

This role focuses on managing the intersection of engineering, content production, and production planning. As a TPM, you will help ensure that technical milestones, gameplay systems, and content workflows progress smoothly from early development through release, while maintaining alignment with creative direction, platform constraints, and external partner requirements.

This position is on-site at our Tokyo office. Applicants currently residing overseas will be considered but must be prepared to relocate to Japan.

Responsibilities

• Plan and track development schedules, milestones, and deliverables for Unreal Engine–based game projects.
• Coordinate closely with gameplay engineers, technical artists, designers, and producers to maintain development momentum.
• Manage technical dependencies across gameplay systems, engine features, tools, and content pipelines.
• Identify and communicate technical risks related to performance, stability, platform constraints, or tooling.
• Act as a bridge between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders, translating engine-level or system-level concerns into clear production plans.
• Support the definition and rollout of production frameworks for feature development, content integration, and builds.
• Monitor scope, staffing, and timelines to ensure realistic planning across engineering and content disciplines.
• Assist with documentation, milestone tracking, and coordination with external partners or IP holders as required.

Requirements

• Currently residing in Japan, or eligible for Japanese visa sponsorship (Bachelor's degree or 10+ years of verifiable experience in a relevant field, required for immigration).
• Experience working in the game industry or closely related real-time interactive fields.
• Strong understanding of game development workflows, including gameplay engineering, content creation, and build processes.
• Familiarity with Unreal Engine or similar commercial game engines.
• Experience with milestone-based game production methodologies.
• Ability to communicate clearly with engineers, artists, designers, and production staff.
• Proficiency with standard business (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) and production tools ().

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3–5+ years of experience in technical project management, production, or engineering coordination on game titles.
• Hands-on technical background in gameplay engineering, technical art, or tools development.
• Experience on at least one shipped game title.
• Familiarity with console or PC platform requirements and performance considerations.
• Experience working with global IP or international publishing partners.
• Business-level Japanese and English communication skills.
