The Marketplace business is the development of Rakuten's founding business, Rakuten Ichiba.

Founded in 1997, Rakuten Ichiba embodies Rakuten's mission of 'empowering people and society through innovation', and has been delivering the joy of shopping to users across Japan by creating a system that enables people who are good at business to easily open shops beyond the limits of their trading areas. We have delivered the joy of shopping to users all over Japan.

Today, it has grown into one of the largest e-commerce sites in Japan, with over 57,000 shops (as of March 2024), more than 100 million user accounts and a large number of users.

Department Overview

Overseas Sales Strategy Department is at the forefront of providing a wide range of support as a partner to overseas shops, including approaching overseas shops that have not yet opened a Rakuten Ichiba shop, sales and marketing for opening a shop, advice for achieving sales targets for overseas shops that have already opened a shop, proposals for advertising placement, market analysis and product planning, in order to realise a world where Japanese consumers can shop from all over the world through Rakuten Ichiba. This is a frontline department that provides a wide range of support as a partner to overseas stores, including advice on achieving sales targets, proposals for advertising placement, market analysis and product planning.

This is a department where you can see how products handled by overseas shops that have not yet arrived in Japan reach and delight users all over Japan, and feel Rakuten's mission of 'empowerment' on the world stage. The US Business Group is a frontline team that provides a wide range of support as a partner to overseas shops, including approaching and marketing to overseas shops that have not yet opened in the US and EU, providing advice to shops that have already opened overseas on how to achieve their sales targets, proposing advertising placement, market analysis and product planning.

Why We Hire

The International Sales Strategy Department, which boasts the highest growth rate among Rakuten Ichiba related businesses, is playing an increasingly important role in Rakuten Ichiba with each passing day.

More and more Japanese consumers are enjoying cross-border e-commerce, and more and more businesses from overseas are opening shops on Rakuten Ichiba. We are looking to strengthen our staffing structure to provide stronger support to our shops and seek new ideas that are not bound by conventional ways of doing things.

Position Details

The US team provides bilingual (English/Japanese) consulting sales services to maximize sales as a partner for overseas shops that have already opened a shop on Rakuten Market.

The US team has been growing at an accelerated pace since 2016, when it was requested to start opening shops on Rakuten Ichiba from the US/EU.

We have assisted many overseas businesses in their cross-border EC business, including major overseas corporations and partners such as Harman International, L.L.Bean International and The Hut Group. In order to support these shops, we are required to cap up our knowledge of domestic and cross-border EC, which is constantly changing.

Day-to-day communication with shops is handled via email, telephone and online meetings, but we may also meet in person to discuss medium- to long-term sales policy proposals and budgets.

The people in charge of the business meetings are mainly representatives and decision-makers of overseas companies and people in charge of shop operations. The PICs of the shops in charge are diverse, including those in Japan, China, the USA, the UK and France. You may be responsible for a wide range of genres.

In this role, you will meet with merchants and business partners to build relationships and close deals, with opportunities for domestic and international business trips and expatriate assignments depending on the business and prevailing conditions.

If you enjoy learning about different businesses and helping companies to grow their business internationally, this role would provide a great amount of opportunities to build international business skills and knowledge as well as working with major multi-national companies and brands.

Specific tasks:

Expanding sales on the Rakuten market for shops in charge (both existing and new)

Share and set sales targets with shops

Support for sharing of Rakuten Market guidelines and VOC improvements

Market analysis

Proposals tailored to each shop's products and situation, such as campaigns during the sales season and attracting customers by placing advertisements to achieve sales targets

Analysis of shop page traffic, customer spend and other figures

Support for the development of original products and private brands

Work Environment

Teams are organised in each of the three regions - US/EU, Korea and China.

We are mainly young people in their 20s and 30s, and communication is flat.

We are a multicultural organisation and have many mid-career hires, although some of them have experience in Rakuten Market Sales Development and EC consultancy. Mid-career recruits come from a wide range of countries and industries, with a variety of backgrounds.

Mandatory Qualifications:

At least 2 years working experience

Sales experience (both corporate and individual) or sales management experience in the distribution/retail industry

Japanese: Business level

English: Business level (able to conduct business meetings with local companies without difficulty)

Excel/PowerPoint processing skills

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in planning/solutions/consulting type sales (no experience in the internet industry required).

Merchandising and sales management experience in the distribution/retail industry (e.g. supervisor/store manager/sales floor manager in convenience stores, department stores, etc.)
