Tsukuba, Ibaraki Build+ (formerly Wahl+Case)

The company is pioneering the future of quantum computing technology. We are seeking a Laser Systems Engineer to join our Laser Systems Group as the first Japan-based member. This is a full-stack role for an engineer or scientist with a strong background in laser systems and their applications in quantum computing.

The Laser Systems Engineer will primarily support the Gemini–AIST Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) and participate in R&D collaborations with Japanese partners, including projects supported by the Japanese government. This position requires a hands-on engineer who is comfortable working with advanced laser systems, vendor co-development, and integration into state-of-the-art neutral atom QPUs.

Responsibilities

QPU Operational Support and Development

  • Serve as the primary local Laser Systems lead for the Gemini–AIST QPU.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade high-precision laser systems used in neutral atom platforms.
  • Support QPU uptime and integration with broader Quantum Systems infrastructure.

R&D and Vendor Collaboration

  • Support joint development projects with Japanese vendors and research institutions, including those under NEDO-funded initiatives.
  • Contribute to next-generation laser system architectures, including control systems, and their integration into quantum platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with Boston-based Laser Systems and Quantum Systems groups to ensure alignment across global efforts.

Operations and Safety

  • Ensure safe operation of Class 4 laser systems in compliance with company and AIST protocols.
  • Assist in developing documentation, SOPs, and QA processes for Japanese operations.

Requirements

  • Eligible to work in Japan, with >80% of working time based at G-QuAT/AIST (Tsukuba area).
  • Ability to lift >20 kg and handle laser hardware.
  • Experience operating and maintaining Class 4 laser systems.
  • Fluent in English; Japanese proficiency is a plus but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laser systems relevant to neutral atom QPU (e.g., Ti:Sapphire, SHG, diode lasers, fiber amplifiers).
  • Familiarity with frequency stabilization techniques (e.g., PDH locking, spectroscopy, wavemeters).
  • Strong skills in documentation and technical communication.
  • Background in collaborative R&D and vendor co-development projects.

Why Join the Japan Team?

This is a foundational role in the company's Japan expansion, offering the opportunity to:

  • Build the Laser Systems function in Japan from the ground up.
  • Work at the intersection of cutting-edge quantum computing and advanced laser technologies.
  • Collaborate closely with leading Japanese research institutions and global teams.
