Tsukuba, Ibaraki Build+ (formerly Wahl+Case)

Summary

A leading quantum computing company is seeking a creative and collaborative Scientific Software Engineer to address the unique software challenges involved in integrating high-level applications with state-of-the-art neutral-atom quantum computing systems.

In this role, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary scientific software team as well as industry and academic collaborators. You will contribute to solving problems ranging from classical compiler techniques to deep integration with low-level quantum hardware components. Using an open-source quantum software toolchain, you will help build and evolve a compiler pipeline spanning low-level hardware instructions through high-level programming languages.

You will collaborate with experimental and computational physicists to co-design compilers and hardware infrastructure for the next generation of quantum computing, including systems incorporating advanced neutral-atom architectures and quantum error correction (QEC) technologies. This is an emerging and fast-evolving field that presents exciting challenges at the intersection of engineering and fundamental science.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain domain-specific languages (DSLs) within the quantum compilation pipeline
  • Build and extend compiler infrastructure supporting hardware execution
  • Support customers by addressing usage questions and resolving technical issues
  • Contribute to the integration and deployment of the compiler pipeline in Japan, working closely with local and global team members
  • Collaborate with scientists and hardware control engineers to plan and implement hardware features required for executing QEC algorithms
  • Work with the scientific software team to deliver new language and hardware capabilities, including:
  • New quantum gates
  • Atom shuttling instructions
  • Low-level pulse and control features

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science with a focus on quantum computation, computer architecture, programming languages, or compiler design, or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong interest in building developer tools used by scientists and engineers without a software background
  • Fluency in Japanese and English, sufficient for technical discussions with team members and customers
  • Experience with:
  • Python semantics, Python type hints, and the CPython interpreter
  • Modern C++ development and associated tooling
  • Compiler design based on Static Single Assignment (SSA) intermediate representations
  • Solid understanding of the full software development lifecycle, including:
  • Version control and code review
  • Testing and CI/CD
  • Logging, profiling, debugging, and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science with a focus on quantum computation, architecture, programming languages, or compilers, or equivalent experience
  • Background knowledge in quantum physics and AMO (atomic, molecular, and optical) physics
  • Experience in programming languages and compiler design
  • Familiarity with quantum error correction concepts
  • Contributions to open-source software projects
