UN Women Internship

Background:

UN Women is committed to advancing gender equality and women's empowerment worldwide. The organization works towards the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, their empowerment, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security.

The UN Women Japan Liaison Office (JLO) was established in Tokyo in 2015. The office focuses on extending policy dialogue by holding lectures, public events, and building strategic partnerships. It targets outreach to various actors, including the government, parliaments, private enterprises, academics, NGOs, media, and other organizations to keep them informed about UN Women's work and role regarding gender equality and women's empowerment.

A prospective intern will assist in planning and implementing the Office's communications, advocacy, and outreach strategies to increase understanding and awareness of UN Women among its stakeholders, such as the media, policymakers, private sector, students, academia, and the public.

Description of Responsibilities

  • Support the office's communications work, including social media outreach and website management;
  • Assist JLO in analyzing, planning, and implementing public and private sector partnership building for mobilizing resources for UN Women;
  • Support the work of the Unstereotype Alliance (UA) Japan National Chapter by identifying opportunities, raising awareness of UA's initiatives, and preparing materials for members;
  • Assist in outreach and advocacy activities with a focus on WEPs (Women's Empowerment Principles), including planning WEPs workshops for private sector companies;
  • Assist in the preparation and organization of various JLO-led events leading up to EXPO, TICAD, and the anniversary of HeForShe;
  • Help produce communications materials, such as fliers, posters, videos, and presentations;
  • Assist in coordination with private, public, and academic entities to perform JLO's advocacy activities.

Learning Objectives

The internship offers students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UN Women's work. It complements women's development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation and international relations.

  • Functional Competencies: Ability to plan and organize events, translate between English and Japanese, high proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, social media and web design knowledge, attention to detail, sound judgment, and ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications

  • Education: University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender, human rights, development, communications, or other relevant subjects are required;
  • Language: Excellent communication skills in English and Japanese are required; working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage;
  • Renumeration: Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs during the internship.
