The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, is a global champion for women and girls. The entity was established in 2010 to accelerate progress towards gender equality and the empowerment of women.
About UN Women Japan Liaison Office
UN Women Japan Liaison Office (JLO) was established in Tokyo in April 2015. The office works on extending policy dialogue by holding lectures, public events, and building strategic partnerships with various actors, including government, parliaments, private enterprises, academia, NGOs, media, and other organizations.
Internship Overview
A prospective intern will assist in the planning and implementation of the Office's communications, advocacy, and outreach strategies to increase understanding and awareness of UN Women among its stakeholders, such as media, policymakers, private sector, students, academia, and the public.
Main Responsibilities
- Support the office's communications work, including social media outreach and website management;
- Analyze, plan, and implement public and private sector partnership building for mobilizing resources for UN Women;
- Support the work of Unstereotype Alliance (UA) Japan National Chapter by identifying opportunities, raising awareness of UA's initiatives, and preparing materials for members;
- Assist in outreach and advocacy activities with a focus on WEPs (Women's Empowerment Principles), including planning WEPs workshops for private sector companies;
- Assist in the preparation and organization of various JLO-led events in the lead up to EXPO, TICAD, and the anniversary of HeForShe;
- Help produce communications materials such as fliers, posters, videos, and presentations; and
- Assist in coordination with private, public, and academic entities in performing JLO's advocacy activities.
Learning Objectives
The internship offers students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UN Women's work and gain practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, human rights, humanitarian action, peace and security, and sustainable development.

Functional Competencies
- Ability to plan and organize events;

- Social media and web design knowledge, including tools and programs, are desirable;
- Attention to detail, sound judgment, and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds;
- Ability to work in a team;
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
Qualifications
Education:
- University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender, human rights, development, communications, or other relevant subjects are required.
Language:
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Japanese are required.
