Position Summary

Senior finance leader accountable for end-to-end finance execution, governance, and strategic financial leadership for the Japan business.

Reporting to the Japan COO, the role leads on-the-ground finance activity and serves as the primary financial and governance representative of the Japan business to Group Finance and regional stakeholders. The incumbent shapes country financial strategy, drives finance transformation priorities, and provides independent judgment to support critical operational and investment decisions.

Operating with Associate Director-level delegated authority, the role is expected to interpret policy, make professional accounting judgments, manage financial risks, and escalate material exceptions with solutions and options—not only issues.

Key Responsibilities

1) Country Finance Leadership & Strategic Direction

• Own Japan finance agenda across controllership, FP&A, treasury partnership, tax, statutory compliance and governance.
• Shape and execute country finance strategy, aligned to business priorities, investment programs and platform standardization.
• Act as the finance leadership counterpart to Japan COO and Country Leadership Team for all financial matters.
• Represent Japan finance in platform / regional finance leadership forums, contributing to policy development and finance best practices beyond Japan.

2) Governance Representation & Decision Rights (Delegated Authority)

• Act as the decision-maker for Japan finance matters within delegated authority, including: financial policy interpretation and local implementation, key accounting judgements (capitalization, provisions, leases, revenue/cost recognition, intercompany matters) governance and risk acceptance recommendations
• Escalate material exceptions, deviations from policy, or high-impact local issues with structured recommendations and options.
• Ensure strong internal controls and governance discipline while enabling business agility and speed.

3) Business Partnering & Performance Management

• Serve as a trusted financial advisor and challenge partner to the Japan COO and Country Leadership, providing independent judgement on:
• Trading performance and cost discipline
• Margin protection and pricing decisions
• investment prioritization and resource allocation
• customer economics and contract profitability
• operational and compliance risk exposure
• Lead performance reviews including variance explanation, forward-looking risk identification, and mitigation planning.
• Own management narratives and insights for Group-level review cycles and executive reporting.

4) FP&A Ownership (Budget / Forecast / Long Range Plan)

• Lead budgeting, forecasting and long-range planning for Japan in coordination with Group FP&A.
• Drive financial modeling for key initiatives including integration, transformation, investment cases and customer commercial proposals
• Ensure data consistency, KPI discipline and decision-quality analytics (P&L, cash, capex).

5) Capex Governance & Investment Oversight

• Own financial governance of capital investments and expansion programs across Japan including multiple years maintenance capex planning, a business case review, challenge capex gating, tracking, disciplined variance management capitalization and project accounting compliance.
• Partner with Construction / Development / Operations/Facilities leadership to ensure finance governance is embedded into execution.

6) Controllership, Reporting & Statutory Compliance

• Ensure timely, accurate and high-quality reporting to Group Finance (including BD+6 close) and statutory requirements (local GAAP).
• Own balance sheet governance including reconciliations, controls, audit readiness and proper accounting treatment.
• Lead relationships and deliverables with external auditors and statutory advisors.
• Maintain compliant reporting structures to meet internal control requirements and external regulatory obligations.

7) Tax Leadership & External Stakeholder Management

• Own local tax compliance and governance, working with internal stakeholders and external advisors.
• Maintain relationships with tax authorities and manage audits and inquiries as required.
• Identify and pursue incentives, subsidies, rebates and other regulatory opportunities to optimize cost and investment outcomes.

8) Treasury Partnership / Cash Leadership / Financing Support

• Partner with Group Treasury on Japan cashflow forecasting, liquidity planning, and capital allocation.
• Support local banking activities, account governance, payment controls, and cash management discipline across entities in Japan
• Support debt financing activities and related reporting in conjunction with Group Finance and Corp Development teams as required.

9) Finance Transformation & Operating Model Evolution

• Drive adoption of group-wide finance systems, reporting platforms and standardized processes.
• Identify and execute automation and process improvement initiatives (closing cycle acceleration, reporting quality, controls, procurement governance).
• Lead finance readiness for integration and platform alignment, ensuring scalable and sustainable steady-state operations.

10) Organization Sustainability, Talent Development & Succession

• Build and evolve a sustainable Japan finance organization, including: future-state capability planning, role design aligned with finance transformation priorities succession planning and development roadmap
• Act as coach and assessor of finance talent, with accountability for readiness of successors and capability depth.
• Maintain a high-performance culture with clear goals, development support and effective performance management.

The successful candidate:

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or related discipline; CPA, USCPA, ACCA or equivalent professional qualification strongly preferred
• 10+ years of progressive finance experience, with demonstrated responsibility at senior manager / associate director level or equivalent
• Prior experience acting as country finance lead or senior finance business partner in a multinational, matrixed organization
• Strong technical expertise in accounting, controllership and financial governance, including professional judgement on capitalization, provisions, leases, and revenue/cost recognition
• Hands-on experience leading budgeting, forecasting and long-range planning in a complex business environment
• Demonstrated experience providing financial governance and challenge over capex programs and investment decisions
• Experience partnering with Group / Regional Finance, including policy interpretation and escalation management
• Track record of managing statutory reporting, audits and tax compliance, including direct interaction with auditors and tax authorities
• Experience in finance transformation, system implementation or platform standardization initiatives
• Proven people leadership experience, including team management, talent development and succession planning
• Ability to operate with delegated authority, exercising sound judgement while appropriately escalating material issues
• Strong communication skills with ability to engage credibly with senior leadership and external stakeholders
• Business-level English and Japanese proficiency required
