The Lead Engineer of EQ Drivetrain Systems is responsible for the team management, development and performance of seven permanent employees.

He or she shall enable the team to support of all pre-development, monitoring, benchmarking, and series development activities for the Japanese market in the field of electric and hybrid vehicle.

In particular charging, battery technology, electric drivetrains, as well as advanced research topics related to the strategy of Mercedez-Benz AG.

He or she is in charge of negotiation of budget with Research & Development (RD) sponsors, defining invest strategy, planning and handling of resources and research scopes in alignment with supervisors/stakeholders from RD Germany (RD/Ex).

Team Lead
Management, guidance, and support of team members
Definition of team vision and mission
Management of regular team communication
Definition of research scopes, negotiation of required headcount and budget with senior management of RD/Ex
Definition of team goals and directions including priority and strategy
Regular report of activities to GM and German counterparts
Personal Development Plan with team members, definition of team strategy
Team budget and resource planning, responsible for invest strategy, continuous tracking of spending
Contribute as appraiser to evaluation process for each team member, including F2F discussions, goal agreements, feedbacks and evaluations of performance
Contribute to recruiting processes and interviews in collaboration with HR
Management of Pre- and Series-Development Activities
Supplier screening and continuous networking with suppliers as a representative of RD/Ex on the Japanese market
Support of supplier sourcing (e.g. RFI/RFQ of eDrive components)
Management of test activities (e.g. research with TITECH)
Support verification of EV vehicles with public infrastructure
Regular communication with E4 managers and project leaders
Responsibility for quality assurance, and regular distribution of monthly/quarterly reports (Newsflash, Battery Innovation Report, Q-report, …)
Handling and scheduling of Ad-hoc requests from RD headquarters
Proposal and agreement for additional market-specific topics with high relevance on MBC orientation and strategy with German counterparts
Definition of Benchmarking needs in alignment with RD/EAE and RD/ETE
Coordination of benchmarking activities incl. budget and resource management, definition of schedule and monitoring of project status
Responsibility for quality assurance and distribution on time of benchmark reports
Management meeting on-site support at Melco in alignment with MBRDNA and RD/ETE Coaching and training of assigned team member for fast and effective results
Definition and agreement of countermeasures in order to ensure on-time delivery at required quality level
Keep agile project support in continuous alignment with MBRDNA and RD/ETE
Make sure of availability of specifications for CHAdeMO charging functionality based on CHAdeMO and HPC standards
Make sure of development support on-time and with requested quality
Make sure of CHAdeMO testing, analysis of results and reporting to Germany
Make sure of Testing of mode2 and mode3 chargers for EVs
Alignment of research scope with RD/EB
Screening of battery cell suppliers and technology to detect potential for collaboration
Coordination of research activities and regular reporting
Responsibility for reporting on time in required quality

Qualifikationen

Training and qualification

Academic degree in electrical, automotive or mechanical engineering, or equivalent education
English – negotiation level (TOEIC 850 or above) required
German – negotiation level (CEFR C1 level) desired
Japanese language skill as a plus
Japanese driver's license
Certificate and training of high-voltage handling

Technical knowledge

Automotive engineering
Electric powertrain technologies
High-voltage system, architecture and components of electric vehicles
RD processes and MDS
High-voltage risks and safety

Soft skills/individual competence

Team management, handling of resources and coaching
Skills and experience in Project Management and negotiation
Ability to define a vision and strategy within the organization
Efficient communication, good presentation skills
Understanding of market and customer needs
Interpersonal and intercultural skills.
Ability to maintain effective relationship in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
Analytical skills including mathematics and statistics, problem solving skills.

Experience

Work experience with team management
Project management (> 2 years)
Experience in reporting and communication with management
Experience in the automotive industry (> 2 years)
Experience as engineer in the field of powertrain for vehicles as a plus
