The Polytechnic School (TPS), located at the ASU Polytechnic campus in Mesa, is nationally recognized for hands-on learning, project-based curricula, applied research, and industry engagement. TPS is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator, Sr. to manage the Innovation Hub, a modern, project-focused engineering shop that supports instructional labs, student projects, applied research, and student organizations.
This position reports to the TPS Manager of Infrastructure and Lab Operations and oversees day to day operations, equipment readiness, safety, training, and technical support. The Innovation Hub is planned for a major redesign and expansion in 2026, and this role will contribute ideas for modern equipment, workflow improvements, and operational planning.
Essential Duties:
Daily Operations and Technical Support
- Manage day-to-day operations of TPS simulation laboratories, including oversight of all activity, equipment readiness, and user support.
- Supervise the safe and proper use of simulation devices and related systems.
- Serve as the lead expert for the laboratory's equipment, software, tools, and systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair hardware and software issues; coordinate with manufacturers and vendors for service and repairs.
- Perform preventative maintenance, calibration, testing, and detailed record keeping.
- Ensure simulation systems meet applicable instructional, technical, or regulatory standards (including FAA-related requirements, if applicable).
Instructional and Student Support
- Train, guide, and support students and student apprentices in safe and effective use of simulator equipment and systems.
- Partner with faculty to support simulation-based learning and project objectives.
- Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the work of student apprentices.
- Create training media, SOPs, and documentation for laboratory and equipment use.
- Support coordination between TPS instructors, industry partners, and the FAA, as appropriate.
Safety and Compliance
- Maintain a safe working environment that meets ASU, TPS, and FSE safety expectations.
- Enforce safety practices, equipment standards, and proper operating procedures.
- Maintain safety documentation, manuals, required records, and signage.
- Coordinate safety and compliance matters with the TPS Manager of Infrastructure and Lab Operations and FSE Safety staff.
Equipment, Inventory, and Facilities Coordination
Conduct preventative maintenance and readiness checks to ensure constant simulator functionality.
- Procure supplies, replacement parts, and necessary components; work directly with vendors for product information and pricing.
- Keep simulation labs organized, functional, and visitor ready. Work with TPS leadership and FSE Facilities on planning, upgrades, and redesign of simulation spaces, including future expansions.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience in the operation and maintenance of professional flight training and air traffic control simulators
Demonstrated experience managing complex simulation environments supporting aviation, robotics, transportation, VR/AR, or similar technical domains.
Advanced technical expertise in simulation hardware, software platforms, networking, and integrated systems troubleshooting.
Proven ability to independently lead preventative maintenance, calibration, testing, and documentation programs for mission-critical simulation systems.
Experience supporting systems subject to external standards or regulatory requirements, including FAA or industry-equivalent frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve multi-layer system failures involving hardware, software, networking, and data integration.
Experience designing or maintaining high-availability or redundancy strategies to minimize simulation downtime.
Strong background developing technical documentation, SOPs, validation protocols, or compliance records for simulation environments.
Experience training and supervising student employees or technical staff in simulation-based instructional or research settings.
Ability to lead root cause analysis for recurring system issues and implement long-term corrective actions.
Experience collaborating with industry partners, vendors, or external stakeholders to support simulation operations, upgrades, or modernization efforts.
