Position Summary
The "Associate Director, Medical Science Liaison Manager (MSL)" is a lead position of MSLs who are field-based scientific experts that strategically supports the medical and scientific objectives of Alexion's product/indication(s) across the product/s life cycle in each TA team. He/she manages, coaches and leads MSL team to maximize each MSL's activities and capabilities by supplying operational guidance along with skills and capability advice in accordance with global/local SOP/Guide, relevant Job Description, and works closely with Medical Lead & colleagues in relevant Business Units (especially RSDs, and others) for smooth collaboration internally and externally. He/she should have excellent communication skills, is capable to manage MSL team efficiently and work as a strong team player to attain all medical activities successfully.
Principal Responsibilities
- Understand principal responsibilities of Alexion's "Manager, MSL" and "Senior Manager, MSL" and support/educate/manage MSL's performance including accurate and unbiased scientific exchange, KOL engagement/interactions to maximize their activities, capabilities and deliverables.
- Supervise the quality and promptness of information reported in Medical CRM tool including Medical Insights by MSLs and supply guidance on reporting as MSL, collecting or medical insights to MSL as needed.
- Supervise whether MSL is complying with the relevant regulations, guidelines, and engaging in activities , including pre-approval activities.
- Organize one on one meetings/field visits to coach and review MSL's capabilities and give appropriate guidance to improve their performance if their activities are under Alexion MSL standard.
- Collaborate with TA Medical Head to recruit the right talent as MSL based on scientific ability, business acumen, communication skills.
- Collaborate with MSL Excellence to identify necessary training contents for MSL's personnel development and achieve passing of annual MSL internal certification for every MSL of the team.
- Summarize and share recent medical gaps/research questions which MSL gathered to reflect strategic and tactical plan in timely manner.
- Work with Medical Lead, TA Medical Head in MA and colleagues in relevant Business Unit for smooth collaboration internally and externally to attain medical affairs vision and objectives based on Medical Plan each year.
- Resource optimization and organizational effectiveness, on-going assessment of MSL team resources to fulfil operational requirement under considering current and future product requirements.
- Manage MSL team's financial resource.
- Analyze and evaluate the unmet medical needs and healthcare system challenges identified by MSLs through pre-approval field activities, and provide scientific perspectives to relevant internal functions to support strategic planning for product launch readiness.
Qualifications
- Substantial industry experience (> 3-4 years).
- Robust and current experience in relevant therapeutic areas relating to drugs in research and development, recently launched and/or marketed biologics/ therapies.
- He/She must have well-established networks and active relationships with KOLs focused on relevant therapeutic area.
- Experience in a MSL activities related field or rare disease is strongly preferred.
- Experience in people management position(s) is preferred.
- He/She should have excellent communication skills (oral and written).
- Energetically embraces responsibilities, demonstrates ability to achieve goals
- Has a strong personal initiative, and functions well as part of a cross-functional team.
- Has excellent people management skills to maximize subordinates' performance.
- Has a project management skill to identify priorities and managing deliverables.
- Exhibits excellent time management and able to work independently.
- Travel within region 3-4 days per week with 1-2 office days per week.
- Required travel to medical meetings, team meetings and other group meetings (will require some weekends –possible 6 /year).
- Native level Japanese and the ability to read and understand company documents and medical journals in English are essential. Business communication skills in English are also desirable.

Education
- Qualifications for doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in sciences, PharmD, or PhD in sciences, or equivalent scientific background (Unless having sufficient experience in the pharmaceutical industry and in area of responsibility).
