Main Purpose of Job: The British Government is recruiting a Communications Officer to support the promotion of the UK's presence at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. We are looking for an enthusiastic comms and marketing professional to help deliver our 'Mission to Expo' campaign before the Expo begins and deliver high impact communications during the Expo period. There will be an exciting variety of content to create, high-level visits to support and many captivating events to be a part of. This is a very exciting role on the frontline of the UK's presence at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, where the activations and campaigns are an integral part of the UK's participation and overall message to promote the UK's presence at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Handle drafting and posting of digital communications via Japan Network social media channels in Japanese and English, including paid campaigns. Comfortable using all social media platforms and management tools such as Hootsuite.

  • Creation of engaging digital content such as infographics, showreels, adverts and videos to bring our messaging to life to a wide range of online audiences. Confident in using video camera equipment for shooting, editing, subtitling and producing final video projects.

  • Use creative-thinking and copywriting experience to enhance our communications offer across a broad range of platforms and assets (newsletters, SNS, branded visuals, paid-ads etc).

  • Translation of communications and marketing materials from English to Japanese to localise contents for a Japanese target audience from business to general public.

  • Apply our branding consistently across all digital content and assets to ensure we are always on brand and on message to promote 'Come Build the Future' and gain brand recognition.

  • Develop and nurture a network of media contacts who are interested to cover the UK's presence at Expo, spotting key media opportunities or cultivating relationships to create them.

  • Manage media moments including press conferences, briefing sessions, 1-1 interviews by arranging logistics, recording the activities and providing a read-out of each engagement.

  • Flag media enquiries and keep in tune to media reporting where the UK is mentioned in relation to Expo and other linked topics.

  • Track the success of communications delivered via social media or earned through media coverage on a monthly basis using internal monitoring tools.

  • Report in a timely manner these results to the Communications & Marketing Manager, contributing to the overall evaluation report throughout each month.

  • Take on board key findings and lessons from the results and implement new changes to improve our communications approach based on evidenced evaluation of activity.

  • Bring new creative ideas on how to do things differently in the communications space, suggesting new tools to use and innovative solutions.

  • Work in sync with the other Communications Officer to share knowledge and cover responsibilities/workload during busy periods or times of absence.

  • Develop strong relationships with wider Japan Network teams who are using the Expo platform, the Expo team based in Osaka, visits and events team working on Expo-focused delivery and the UK Expo comms team to align plans and overall communications direction.

  • Work with appointed agencies to deliver communications campaigns, branding, advertising and media engagement opportunities.

  • Support Japan Network priority moments such as VIP visits, large events and cross-team activities.

  • Support during events, on digital activity and online platforms when necessary.

  • Potential to support the launch of a new digital channel as and when new direction/priority is given.



Requirements:


  • Experience in Japanese language communications, content creation, media handling and marketing.

  • Well-developed skills in IT, copywriting, branding and social media.

  • Good capability in photography and videography to shoot/film content, and edit to create engaging videos and take striking images.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop good relationships with key stakeholders and clients.

  • Good understanding of content management and targeting specific audiences.

  • Good understanding of evaluation tools and techniques.

  • Ability to work independently and creatively on projects.

  • Ability to work in an English-speaking environment.

  • Fluent Japanese.

  • Business level English (TOEIC score 900+).



Working Patterns: Full time and office based. 37.5 hours per week. The British Consulate General supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, remote working (for agreed periods), and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
