Job Introduction

We're excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Safety Culture Lead to join our dedicated Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) team at National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED).

Role
In this influential role, you'll act as a trusted internal consultant—working across the business to shape, elevate and embed a strong, progressive safety culture. You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Partner with teams across NGED to understand their environment and identify what truly drives safe behaviours
  • Share insights, best practice and fresh thinking that enhance our safety maturity
  • Lead initiatives that create safer ways of working and empower people to take positive ownership of safety
  • Make a meaningful impact in a business that powers millions of homes and communities

This is a role with real reach and visibility, perfect for someone who enjoys influencing, engaging with diverse stakeholders, and turning ideas into practical, value‑adding improvements.

We offer a hybrid working approach, giving you the flexibility to combine home working with time in the office. Travel will vary depending on business needs, but typically won't exceed a couple of days a week away from your base location.

You can be based at any of our offices or depots across the East Midlands, West Midlands, South West or South Wales—giving you the freedom to choose the location that works best for you.

If you're passionate about strengthening safety culture and want a role where your expertise truly makes a difference, we'd love to hear from you.

Main Responsibilities

  • Partner with teams across NGED to drive high‑quality health and safety behaviours, offering expert, risk‑based guidance and proactive interventions.
  • Lead NGED‑wide behavioural safety programmes, working collaboratively from design through to delivery to ensure initiatives are impactful, sustainable and aligned with business needs.
  • Shows a genuine passion for enhancing safety performance through the effective application of human factors, human organisational performance or other psychological thinking.
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with stakeholders at all levels, providing consistent, professional advice, constructively challenging poor safety behaviours and acting as a credible advisor across the business.
  • Support the development and embedding of our Safety Management System, clearly communicating requirements and guiding teams on translating these into effective, business‑specific processes.
  • Provide tailored, pragmatic solutions to business challenges, helping teams strengthen safety behaviours and sharing learning to promote continuous improvement.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the operational environment, ensuring advice is timely, relevant and aligned to strategic priorities.
  • Act as the first point of contact for behavioural safety matters, delivering generalist support across NGED in line with business needs and direction from the Head of Safety.
  • Scan internal and external trends to identify opportunities that advance our safety maturity and support our Safety Ambition—ensuring practices remain customer‑focused, fit for purpose, simple and effective.
  • Engage with external bodies, including working at management level with organisations such as the ENA, and contribute to internal and external benchmarking to drive behavioural safety improvements across the industry.

Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience delivering professional, risk‑based safety advice within complex operational environments—ideally in a large, global or utility‑sector organisation. Knowledge of National Grid's operations would be an advantage.
  • A strong change agent, passionate about behavioural safety and with a track record of driving cultural development in previous roles.
  • In‑depth practical knowledge of safety legislation, alongside an understanding of safety innovation, industry standards and best practice.
  • Experience collaborating across industry groups and forums, including positive engagement with trade unions.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships at all levels and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and decision‑making capability, able to assess complex situations and make sound, confident judgments at pace.
  • Demonstrable experience managing projects end‑to‑end, from scoping and planning through to implementation and evaluation.
  • Degree‑level education in social/behavioural sciences preferably, engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • A recognised safety qualification, such as CMIOSH, NEBOSH Diploma, or evidence of working towards one would be an advantage.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues and customers. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service, (DBS) check, depending on the role different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.
