Role
Vena Energy Japan is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Technical Services team, supporting the delivery of Data Centre and energy integration projects. As we expand our Vena Nexus pipeline, this role is pivotal in shaping our strategy to develop, design, and deliver next-generation data centres that are deeply integrated with renewable energy systems and energy storage (BESS).
You will lead engineering and design coordination for our data centre projects across Japan, with a strong focus on early-stage project development, technical due diligence, system design leadership, and support throughout construction and commissioning.
In addition to the core engineering responsibilities, the role will encompass broader design management functions including consultant coordination, design optimisation, and stakeholder engagement. This is a client-side technical leadership role, interfacing across internal engineering teams, external consultants, contractors, and equipment suppliers to deliver scalable, efficient, and high-availability digital infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design Integration
- Lead the technical development of data centre projects from feasibility through to execution.
- Ensure end-to-end comprehensive design coverage for architecture, power, cooling, SCADA, grid connection, and compliance with Japanese and international standards.
- Coordinate concept, schematic, and detailed design phases with internal and external stakeholders.
Design Management & Consultant Coordination
- Manage external design consultants (architectural, MEP, civil/structural) to ensure timely, complete deliverables aligned with project milestones.
- Maintain a centralised design repository and lead periodic design reviews to drive efficiency and cost-performance improvements.
Project Development & Due Diligence
- Support early-stage project evaluation including technical due diligence, land screening, and infrastructure capacity review.
- Evaluate the feasibility of integrating renewable energy and BESS systems into data centre designs.
- Procurement & RFQ Support
- Develop and review technical specifications for EPCs, consultants, and equipment packages.
- Contribute to vendor selection, cost estimation and benchmarking, and component and service sourcing strategy.
Construction & Commissioning Oversight
- Monitor construction and commissioning activities, ensuring system performance and documentation compliance.
- Lead or coordinate commissioning activities ensuring performance and documentation compliance.
- Resolve technical issues during site execution.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Act as the engineering interface across internal teams (Grid, Civil, BESS, Solar, Wind, GIS, BD, PM) and external stakeholders (consultants, contractors, OEMs, utilities).
- Lead technical meetings and align scope, quality, and timeline expectations.
Pre-Requisites
:
- Minimum 7+ years of engineering experience in data centres, critical infrastructure, or power-intensive industrial facilities.
- Proven experience in design management, consultant coordination, and modular/prefabricated deployment models.
- Hands-on knowledge of electrical systems, SCADA, cooling, and grid-connected power systems.
- Experience supporting or leading commissioning and site engineering during construction phases.
- Exposure to renewable energy projects and/or battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a strong plus.
Skills
- Strong understanding of data centre design standards (e.g., Tier III/IV, ANSI/TIA-942, Uptime Institute).
- Proficient in interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
- Adept at coordinating with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced, evolving project environment.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of engineering scope across different phases.
- Excellent coordination and communication skills across functions and consultants.
- Detail-oriented and highly organised, and adaptive to evolving inputs.
- Collaborative and able to manage competing priorities with clarity.
- Strong practical design sense, with a focus on technical soundness, cost efficiency, and execution alignment.
Language
- English: Highly Proficient (required for internal coordination and documentation).
- Japanese: Business level or above (required for technical discussions with consultants, contractors, and authorities).
