The Design Manager (MEP) is responsible for overseeing and managing the technical aspects of mechanical and electrical design during the design and construction phases of data centre development projects. Based on the project specific Basis of Design (BOD), the Design Manager ensures that the design aligns with project requirements, operational standards, and global best practices. The role also involves coordination with internal and external stakeholders, including JV partners, local/overseas design consultants, contractors, and other project related consultants/vendors, to ensure seamless communication and design integrity throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and supervise MEP design activities during the design development phase based on the established BOD (Basis of Design).
Review design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with technical standards, project requirements, and constructability considerations.
Provide technical input and design direction to internal teams and external consultants.
Coordinate with overseas design teams (including JV partner teams) to ensure proper understanding and translation of design intent.
Manage the technical review process in collaboration with internal and external engineering/project management/construction teams, ensuring timely feedback and quality control.
During the construction phase, review critical technical documents such as shop drawings, cut sheets, construction method statements, and inspection/test scripts.
Support project/construction managers in resolving technical issues during construction and commissioning.
Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, workflows, and quality assurance processes within the organization.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Native-level Japanese and business-level English proficiency (both written and spoken).
Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (academic degree not strictly required if professional experience is sufficient).
Minimum 7 years of experience in MEP design or construction within an architectural design firm, engineering consultant, general contractor, or MEP specialty contractor.
Strong technical understanding of building systems, particularly those applied to data centres or mission-critical facilities (HVAC, power, fire protection, etc.).
Proven experience in reviewing design and construction documents for technical compliance and coordination.
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary and multinational teams.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple review processes simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in data centre or mission-critical facility projects.
Familiarity with international design standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, IEC, etc.).
Experience coordinating design between Japan and overseas engineering teams.
Professional licenses or certifications (e.g., 一級建築士, 建築設備士, Professional Engineer, or equivalent) are advantageous.
