Our Communications team includes PR/media relations, employee communications, events, and other external-facing functions. This team's ethos is to support OpenAI's mission and goals by clearly and authentically explaining our technology, values, and approach to safely building powerful AI.

About The Role
We're seeking to hire an exceptional PR professional in Japan to communicate progress on our mission to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that benefits all of humanity.

This person will manage PR/media relations for OpenAI in Japan and work closely with cross-functional teams to drive external communications that broadly educate on our technology, efforts, and principles. The role will report to our Communications Lead for Japan and collaborate closely with our APAC and Global Communications team.

The growing impact and visibility of ChatGPT and our other technologies has led to high-profile and widespread interest in OpenAI from reporters and media outlets all over the world. We believe it is our responsibility to educate external audiences about the benefits and risks of our technology, communicate our values and intentions, and explain our approach to the safe development and deployment of AI.

The ideal candidate should bring a strong mix of strategic and tactical comms ownership. Ability to move fast and collaboratively on complex issues in a changing environment is critical. Passion for new technology and storytelling is key.

This role is based in Tokyo, Japan. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In This Role, You Will

  • Support customer announcements, enterprise/education storytelling.
  • Develop and execute communications strategies to raise awareness of OpenAI's products, partnerships, and mission in Japan.
  • Forge deep relationships with local media and manage inbound requests on a range of issues
  • Manage media briefings, and cultivate relationships with influencers.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Marketing, Events, Global Affairs, Product and other teams in Japan and APAC.
  • Provide counsel and support to team members across the organization
  • Anticipate comms risks and establish risk mitigation strategies.
  • Localize US press release, materials to Japanese market

We're Looking For a Blend Of Qualifications, Including

  • 5-10 years of professional PR and media relations experience
  • In-house experience in a fast-paced, technology-focused environment is a must
  • Strong track record of driving media campaigns in support of commercial, product and policy priorities
  • Experience with influencer engagement and social amplification in Japan
  • Background in technology communications and an interest in AI
  • Proven success in building relationships and collaborating with press, executives, partners and other stakeholders
  • Localize international strategy and content for Japan market
