Operational Excellence Lead (Sr. Manager to Director)
Location
Japan (Tokyo preferred), Hybrid / flexible work arrangement
Role Purpose
The Operational Excellence Lead is responsible for designing, embedding, and continuously improving operational frameworks across all consignment (CSO) projects. This role ensures operational consistency, scalability, compliance, and execution excellence across multiple clients and projects.
Acting as a central enabler between Project Directors, Field Leadership, Training, Recruiting, IT, HR, Compliance, Finance, and Clients, the role drives standardized processes, governance models, and performance management systems while retaining flexibility to meet client-specific contractual requirements.
This position plays a critical role in supporting large, complex CSO engagements and in building a sustainable, best-in-class consignment operating model for the broader organization.
Key Responsibilities
- CSO / Consignment Operating Model Excellence
Own and evolve the end-to-end CSO operating model across all consignment projects.
Define standard yet flexible frameworks for:
Project mobilization and launch readiness
Field operations and governance
Performance management and KPI execution
Organization development
Ensure consistency across projects while allowing for client-specific customization.
- Process Design, Standardization & Continuous Improvement
Develop and maintain CSO playbooks, SOPs, and templates used for both delivery and proposals.
Identify execution risks, inefficiencies, and scalability constraints across projects and address them through continuous improvement initiatives.
Apply Lean / Operational Excellence methodologies to improve speed, quality, and cost efficiency.
- Business Development & Growth Enablement (Director Level)
Partner with Business Development and Solution Design teams to support consignment growth.
Translate client needs, RFPs, and BD concepts into operationally viable CSO solutions.
Contribute to:
Proposal development (operating models, governance, KPIs, resourcing)
Risk assessment and mitigation planning for new opportunities
Provide operational input on:
Scalability assumptions
Cost drivers and efficiency levers
Transition and implementation feasibility
Support refinement of the value proposition for consignment services based on delivery experience.
Identify, design, and incubate new service offerings that extend or complement the consignment model
Work with internal stakeholders to:
Build business cases (value proposition, cost structure, scalability)
Pilot new services within existing projects
Define go-to-market models and operational requirements
- Cross-Functional Leadership & Stakeholder Management
Act as a horizontal integrator across:
Project Directors
Field leadership
Training, IT, Recruiting, HR, Compliance, Finance
Business Development and Solution Design
Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on operational and growth strategy.
Support client interactions where operational credibility and execution expertise are required.
- Compliance & Risk Management Enablement
Embed regulatory and compliance requirements into operational designs and delivery models.
Support audit readiness, compliance reviews, and CAPA planning when issues arise, in collaboration with Compliance, Quality Assurance, etc.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree or higher (business, life sciences, or related field)
10+ years of experience in one or more of the following:
Pharmaceutical commercial operations
Consulting or commercial excellence
Demonstrated experience leading large scale field force operations
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and storytelling skills
Strong understanding of pharma commercialization, compliance and regulatory environments, challenges and unmet needs in pharma commercialization in Japan
Business-level fluency in both Japanese and English
Willingness and ability to travel domestically for business
Experience supporting business development, proposals, or client pitches in a services environment is preferred
