Minato Herbert Smith Freehills Full time

We offer internship opportunities to students interested in working in a leading global law firm. You will work alongside partners and associates on tasks and projects for clients, gaining insight into our practice areas. You may also be involved in workshops and presentations, and invited to social events. By the end of your internship, you should have a good idea of whether a career with an international law firm is right for you. Our Tokyo office operates as a registered foreign law office, and we do not practice Japanese law. All our lawyers are qualified in jurisdictions outside Japan, and our focus is on cross-border transactions and disputes for Japanese corporate clients. To be eligible, you must be a student or recent graduate, fluent in English and have a high level of competency in Japanese, able to live and work legally in Tokyo, and have the means to support your own living arrangements and expenses. You should be a self-motivated individual with outstanding achievements in academic and extra-curricular activities, and a team player with excellent organisation and communication skills. Your internship will be arranged to enable you to spend time in both our corporate and dispute resolution practice groups. We offer placement in our market-leading Corporate and Dispute Resolution Practice Groups, insight into the work of a globally-leading, international law firm, a diverse and friendly working environment, and opportunities to learn from our lawyers and business service functions. Our corporate practice focuses on outbound cross-border M&A transactions for Japanese clients, and our dispute resolution practice specialises in international arbitration, commercial litigation and other forms of ADR. We have particular experience in matters arising in the energy and resources, TMT, manufacturing, industrials, healthcare, pharmaceutical, infrastructure and consumers sectors. Our market-leading corporate and dispute resolution practices in Japan receive consistent praise and awards. The internship scheme has a maximum duration of four weeks, and applications will open from 1 November 2024 to 3 January 2025. If your initial application is successful, you'll be interviewed by the partners or associates in our Tokyo office. We offer a diverse, innovative culture where high performance, client focus and highly engaged people are our differentiator. We strive to ensure that our inclusive environment means you feel valued and able to perform at your best by being your authentic self at work. We know that our future success not only depends on being innovative and progressive in the changing legal market but, most importantly, on our people feeling highly engaged in meaningful work. We understand that you have commitments and personal interests outside of work and we strive to create a working environment based on mutual trust and respect, in which you can perform at your best whilst maintaining sustainable balance across your life.
