Work Responsibilities

You will be challenged with developing features for the flea market app "Mercari," the smartphone payment service "Merpay," and the cryptocurrency/blockchain service "Mercoin" within Japan.

You will join a team of software engineers with diverse backgrounds and expertise and take on responsibilities as a team member.

Regarding specific tasks, you will be involved in projects aimed at improving the user experience (UX) and specifications from the customer's perspective for Mercari, Merpay, and Mercoin.

Currently, Mercari is implementing various initiatives, such as improving the search interface and measures related to listing and purchasing. You will engage with the technology and data firsthand and produce tangible outputs.
Ultimately, you will present your work and actual results at a final report meeting. Presentation materials from past interns are available on our owned media, "Mercan," so please take a look.

During this internship, you will work to develop actual features integrated into the app and to improve the operation of the app.

Those who are interested in management and building an engineering organization and culture as a leader candidate (CTO, VPoE, etc.) who will lead the Mercari Group organization in the future.

Those who can express what they want to do through their output and co-create with teams and organizations.
Those who enjoy change and can boldly take on challenges even in unfamiliar areas or difficult situations.
Shared belief in the mission and values of Mercari Group and its various companies
Student of 16 years of age or older who would be able to join Mercari Group as a new graduate from July 2026 to June 2027

If you have work experience as a full-time employee at another company and that experience is within the last three years, you can participate as a second new graduate.

Second new graduates should include their work history in their resume.
Interest in joining the Mercari Group as a software engineer after completing the internship
Required Experience/Skills
(For residents in Japan only) Those who have experience using various Mercari services
Experience in delivering results through projects utilizing the latest AI technologies and tools
Basic knowledge of RDBMS and SQL
Experience developing/operating products

Experience in at least one of the following:
Backend
API development using a programming language such as Go, PHP, or Java
Frontend
Development using such things as JavaScript or React
Mobile (iOS)
Development using Swift
Machine Learning
Practical experience in ML modeling or development experience in ML systems
Platform Engineering
Development using Go and Kubernetes
Site Reliability Engineering
Development using Go, Kubernetes, and Terraform
Data Engineer
Experience in data aggregation, analysis, and/or visualization using Python, SQL, and other relevant tools.
Preferred Experience/Skills
An interest in leading businesses and organizations, with a desire for a future management career.
Experience producing tangible results in a business setting, such as through internships or entrepreneurship.
Experience with project management and/or team leadership
Ability to design and develop with performance and scalability in mind
Knowledge of object-oriented software development, networking, and memory management.
Knowledge in software test including unit testing, functional testing, and e2e testing
Knowledge of and experience with networks, Linux servers, surveillance systems, logging, and system operation
Experience with development and operation in a microservices architecture
Cloud development experience (preferably Google Cloud or AWS)
Understanding of UI development
OSS contribution experience / familiarity with OSS community
Experience with team development using Git or similar management systems
Language

English or Japanese:
Independent (CEFR - B2)
In Merpay, there are cases where Independent (CEFR - B2)-level Japanese is required
In Mercari, there are cases where Independent (CEFR - B2)-level English Independent is required

業務内容

国内におけるフリマアプリ「メルカリ」、スマホ決済サービス「メルペイ」、暗号資産・ブロックチェーンサービス「メルコイン」の機能開発に挑戦していただきます。多様なバックグラウンドや専門性を持つソフトウェアエンジニアが所属するチームにジョインしていただき、チームの一員として業務を担っていただきます。
具体的な業務内容については、メルカリ・メルペイ・メルコインにおけるお客さま目線のUX向上や仕様改善に関するプロジェクトに携わっていただきます。現在、メルカリでは検索画面の改善をはじめ、出品・購買に関する多様な施策が行われているため、実際に技術やデータに触れていただき、アウトプットを出していただきます。
