:Department Overview
Rakuten Institute of Technology (RIT) , the core AI research wing of Rakuten, is spread across six geographical locations including Tokyo, Singapore, Boston, San Mateo, Bengaluru, and Paris. This division consists of AI research scientists with specialization in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision and data mining.
With more than 70 different services in the Rakuten Group globally, our data science teams cover diverse initiatives in both the online and offline worlds. Offline Geo data and Geo Science applications are key to the optimization and overall success in fields including Logistics, Site Planning, Area Marketing and improving Customer Experience. The Geo Science Team creates algorithms and builds new Geo Intelligence layers to better understand offline activity to support many Rakuten Group services.

We are looking for talented Data Science Engineers with a strong background in at least one of the related fields (user behavior, marketing, fintech, geo-spatial data or full-stack data science product development) and a strong motivation to join an exciting team that is constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries on AI and its applications.
Position Details
Work on science projects with members of our Offline Behaviors & Intelligence team
Develop data science and data management applications
Work with Project Management team to gather business requirements, set evaluation metrics and calculate if the solution meets/exceeds them
Work with science, engineering and product teams to adapt prototypes in production
Design, Develop, Test, and Deploy. The entire software engineering process stack
Mandatory Qualifications:
Experience building data management & science solutions to problems in: Telco, Mobility and general Geo Spatial data applications (ex. User behavior extraction, user segment building, multi-data source user behavior combination, campaign target design, mobility data analysis, Telco data, GPS & IP data)
Understanding general user behavior, especially offline behaviors in comparison to online
Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, econometrics or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of data engineering and/or software development experience.
English fluency and ability to communicate effectively with researchers, engineers, and business people
Strong programming experience in one or more of the following: Python, R, Scala, Java, C, C++
Self-motivated and willingness to take challenges to new technologies, research problems and services
Passion for contributing to businesses by applying innovative solutions to real world problems
Development experience in Unix/Linux
Development experience in cloud platforms (ex. Azure, GCP, AWS)
Strong database fundamentals including SQL, performance and schema design.
Must have strong abstraction abilities and be able to create good logical data models.
Desired Qualifications:
Publication record or patents in the areas of machine learning, data mining, Telco, Geo-Spatial related fields
Good knowledge of Big Data querying tools, such as Pig, Hive, and Spark SQL.
Experience of productizing research outcomes in an industry
Experience in distributed computing such as Spark and Hadoop
Knowledge and experience of Agile software development processes.
Special GEO/GIS data processing background will be a strong plus.
Experience in DevOps.
Knowledge of JSON, Avro, Parquet.
Experience with Big Data ML toolkits, such as: SparkML, Mahout, or H2O.
