The Product Merchandising team connects members to Netflix's world of entertainment by blending intuitive merchandising and local expertise to position, promote and present content so members find it easy and enjoyable to choose what they'll love.
The Product Merchandising Japan Director is pivotal in ensuring the successful launch and positioning of all Japanese titles on Netflix. This leader oversees a multidisciplinary team responsible for strategic and tactical merchandising, guiding creative and launch strategies, while ensuring the coherence and authenticity of promotional materials.
Responsibilities:
You will drive the strategy and execution of title merchandising, launch planning, and promotional and launch excellence for the Japanese catalog on Netflix. You will lead a multidisciplinary team, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, and ensure that our content is positioned and presented in a way that delights members and achieves business goals. Your responsibilities will span both strategic leadership and hands-on operational management, with a strong focus on Japan's needs as well as alignment with global Product Merchandising standards.
Team Leadership: Build and lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team responsible for title merchandising and launch decisions. Provide clarity, focus, and inspiration amidst the challenges of a rapidly evolving business.
Merchandising: Leverage data, insights, and a strong knowledge of local content and consumer preferences to develop and implement launch strategies for all titles in your portfolio, ensuring operational excellence and high-quality execution. Guide the review and creation of promotional assets to meet standards of coherence and authenticity.
Operational Excellence: Regularly review and optimize workflows, identify and remove roadblocks, and collaborate with cross-functional leaders to enhance processes.
Stakeholder Management: Serve as the primary Product Merchandising contact for Marketing, Content, and other partners. Build strong relationships with leadership teams and foster partnerships aligned with Netflix Japan business needs.
Global Integration: Promote and implement operational templates to ensure global team consistency, while identifying opportunities for local flexibility and innovation.
Advocacy: Represent the Merchandising experience to executive stakeholders, address queries and escalations, and enhance the organization's understanding of promotional and discovery functionalities. Represent the needs, nuances, and complexity of Japan and seek broader understanding and best practices globally.
Initiatives: Lead the adoption and implementation of strategic initiatives and programs within Japan. Provide regular status updates and feedback to enhance program effectiveness.
Analytical and Creative Decision-Making: Drive smart, business-impactful decision-making by combining analytical rigor with creative problem-solving and a passion for building compelling promotional experiences.
Culture: Act as a steward of Netflix's culture, building a collaborative, high-performing, and inclusive team environment.
Product Representation: Act as an effective bridge between local cross-functional teams and broader regional/global Product teams; representing both local business goals and global Product priorities.

Adept at speaking to Product considerations (member-first approach, hypotheses forming and experimentation) as well as Marketing/Content concerns (audiences, how to integrate brand into day-to-day work, storytelling)
Business fluency in Japanese and English
You are a builder and developer of strong multidisciplinary teams
Have 10+ experience building, growing and evolving high performing teams comprising multiple functions
Have deep curiosity for how things work - and have a willingness to unlearn to learn, unafraid to dig in/ roll up your sleeves to understand granular details and tactics while maintaining clarity of the big picture and strategy
Understand how to develop and sustain a healthy and inclusive organisation
Leadership experience in a fast-paced growth environment, passionate about building 0-1 and balancing that within the realities of available systems and constraints.
