Role Description
This is an opening for a teacher to deliver 24 hours of teaching per week on a 4-skills EAP course run in partnership with a private university in Nagoya and the British Council.

Job Overview
The role will involve teaching academic English to 1st year students and conducting tutorials together with teachers at the university. There will be two 15-week semesters, and intensive programmes taking place during spring and summer vacation periods. In principle, teachers are asked to take all leave outside these times.

The role will require 24 hours of teaching per week, over 42 weeks in the year. Materials development and other external teaching work in Nagoya will fill any remaining contract hours. The role will also involve working closely with coordinators employed by the university, so the ability to forge an excellent working relationship and work as part of a team will be critical.

Accountabilities
Support the British Council's global English strategy by preparing and delivering English language teaching to the highest professional standards. This includes ensuring that all teaching meets learner needs and expectations, aligns with Teaching Quality Standards, and reflects organisational expectations. Continuous professional development is actively pursued, with best practices shared regularly to maintain and improve teaching quality.

In addition, administrative responsibilities are completed accurately and on time, supporting the smooth delivery of programmes. Strong, professional relationships are maintained with both customers and colleagues to ensure a positive learning environment and effective collaboration across teams.

Essentials
Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree (in any discipline),
• Cambridge CELTA or Trinity certificate, TESOL
• 2 years post-certificate experience
• Previous experience teaching at a Japanese university
• High proficiency in English, i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8 or 9 in each of the four sections of the academic module.

Desirables

• Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma
• Relevant MA

Important Information

• Salary: JPY 350,000 to JPY 380,000 gross per month (depending on qualification and work experience)
• Location: Nagoya, Japan
• Start date: Tentative April 2026 (depending on business requirements and PAS completion process)
• Duration: 12-month contract
• Contract type: Fixed-term
• Work Schedule: Mon-Fri based on university schedule
• Local restriction on employment / Right to work: Candidate must have a pre-existing right to work in Japan. These roles are only open to applicants who currently have permission to live and work in Japan.
