Job Overview

We are recruiting highly motivated, flexible, and customer-oriented EFL teachers to teach elementary school students and/or junior high school / high school students at our new Musashi Kosugi, Kawasaki Teaching Centre at weekends from the start of September 2024. Classes will mostly be scheduled in the morning and afternoon. Teachers will be asked to commit until the end of the academic year in March 2025. Some Early Years classes (ages 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6) may also be available. 'In addition, there may also be some weekday classes (Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri) available at various times (morning, afternoon, evening) including both children and adult classes. Please specify in your supporting statement whether you are interested in weekday work as well, and if so which age groups.'

The ideal candidate will be comfortable teaching multiple age groups from 3 years old to adults and a wide range of levels from beginner to proficient. Experience teaching phonics and literacy is also desirable.

Role Purpose

  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.
  • To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission.

    • Accountabilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality English language lessons which meet the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles – up to the number of contracted teaching hours
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students' performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy and a sense of progress
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials, and related services, to meet students' needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain the British Council's position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  • Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students' understanding of contemporary UK
  • Assist the teaching center team in delivering excellent customer service and upholding British Council Values and Behaviours
  • Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas: Child protection Equal Opportunity and Diversity Health and safety

    • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL

    • Desirables

  • Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC), YL extension to CELTA, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), or equivalent
  • CELTA Pass A or Pass B
  • Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma or equivalent

    • Language Requirements

  • High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module

    • Work Experience

    Essential

  • 2 years post-certificate (i.e., CELTA or Trinity certificate TESOL) experience

    • Desirables

  • Experience teaching Young Learner groups of up to 15 students
  • Experience teaching Young Learners in Japan

    • Salary & Benefits

  • Salary : You will be paid at an hourly rate that corresponds to your teaching qualification and experience post qualification as stated below; 4,484 yen/hour for teachers with a CELTA or equivalent 4,993 yen/hour for teachers with a DELTA or equivalent
  • Commuting allowance : Commuting allowance based on actual commuting cost up to a max of ¥30,000 per month
  • Start date: September 2024
  • Duration: 31st March 2025
  • Contract type : Fixed-term
  • Right to work in country: Pre-existing right to work in Japan. These roles are only open to applicants who currently have permission to live and work in Japan. Please note that if your current working visa is under the 'Other' category (e.g. Professor, Instructor, Artist) you will need to apply for permission to work under the category (Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services).

  • Local restriction on employment: These roles are only open to applicants who currently have permission to live and work in Japan.
  • Income tax and national insurance : Your salary is a gross salary and is subject to local taxes and statutory deductions. The British Council will make deductions from your salary at source in respect of tax and other sums due where appropriate. If the laws and regulations of Japan require you to account directly for any tax or other sums that are due in respect of your salary, it is your responsibility to properly account for such tax and other sums to the appropriate authorities. The British Council will make no additional payments to you in respect of any liability for tax or other sums that you may have. Any liability you may have for tax or other sums due in other jurisdictions will be your responsibility, save as set out in this contract. No additional payment will be made to you by the British Council in respect of such liabilities.
