Fulton Schools of Engineering, you'll supervise the daily operation of cutting-edge manufacturing research and teaching laboratories that power discovery and hands-on learning. You'll specifically oversee advanced machining and subtractive manufacturing systems, mentor student researchers, lead laboratory sessions and collaborate with faculty on experimental platforms that bridge academia and industry. The ideal candidate will oversee and coordinate operational laboratory activities across teaching laboratories within the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks (MSN) in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. Ensures that experimental testbeds, laboratory equipment related to machining systems are properly maintained, calibrated, and operating safely and efficiently. Trains, mentors, and supervises undergraduate and graduate research and teaching assistants in laboratory procedures, experiment setup, and equipment operation. Collaborates with Faculty Principal Investigators (PIs) to design, propose, and implement new instructional and research testbeds, experiments, and demonstrations that advance academic learning, support ongoing research initiatives, and align with workforce development goals. Maintains a culture of safety, technical excellence, and innovation within the laboratory environment.

Essential Duties:

  • Execute day-to-day operation of MSN's machining laboratories, working directly with CNC equipment, tooling, and metrology systems.

  • Serve as the School's technical authority for machining and manufacturing systems, advising faculty and leadership on equipment selection, upgrades, and long-term infrastructure planning.

  • Develops and implements laboratory sessions, lead training, and demonstrations for MSN academic/workforce development courses.

  • Design, fabricate, and test components, fixtures, and prototypes in support of research and instructional activities.

  • Train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, research assistants, and teaching staff in advanced machining, fabrication, and lab safety procedures.

  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and implement new laboratory testbeds and demonstrations that advance applied learning and research goals.

  • Manage preventive maintenance, calibration, and vendor coordination for complex equipment.

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and maintenance documentation in coordination with FSE Facilities and Safety team.

  • Monitor and track laboratory utilization, equipment performance, and inventory; recommend capital equipment investments based on data and observed needs.

  • Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the laboratory environment.

  • Support technical aspects of proposal preparation or project planning as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by the School Leadership Team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise operating and programming multi-axis CNC machining centers, Electrical discharge machining (EDM), industrial robots/automation, precision metrology systems, and CAD/CAM software such as Fusion 360, Mastercam, NX, or SolidWorks.

  • Familiarity with hybrid additive, digital manufacturing, or automation systems.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T and metrology.

  • Experience mentoring others or training others in a professional work environment or university lab setting

  • Proven record of executing complex machining and fabrication projects independently.

  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and calibrating manufacturing equipment and tooling.

  • Experience developing and implementing laboratory safety procedures and training others in technical operations.

  • Experience leading technical lab operations or serving as the senior technical expert in a multi-user manufacturing facility.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across faculty, staff, and student teams.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office and laboratory settings subject to extended periods of standing and sitting.

  • Lift or move heavy items, more than 40 lbs. regularly.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, pushing and pulling heavy items.

  • Use office equipment including a desktop computer.

  • Move and Use of laboratory equipment with pallet jacks.

  • Work both independently or within a complex structured team.
