AREA 35, Inc.
is a dynamic Japanese development company based in Tokyo, JAPAN looking to recruit an experienced senior-level programmer for Unreal Engine-based development. We have a wide portfolio of development projects ongoing, including games and enterprise collaboration software. AREA 35 also works in the field of animated media production, with a view to expanding and integrating the pioneering field of real-time rendering into mainstream production in Japan.
As a Senior Programmer some of your responsibilities will include analyzing, designing, coding, debugging, testing and modifying new software or enhancements. Senior Programmers are also key players in systems design, consultation, and support. You will engage directly with the Design Team to analyze feature feasibility and work closely with them on implementation. You will report to a Lead Programmer who manages the day-to-day, but in general you will be free to work on your assigned projects with a minimum of supervision.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement complex gameplay and system features in Unreal Engine, collaborating closely with designers and artists.
- Take ownership of specific technical areas, including architecture, implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
- Participate in technical planning and estimation, helping production shape realistic schedules and identifying potential risks early.
- Conduct code reviews and contribute to raising engineering quality standards across the team.
- Support and mentor less experienced programmers, offering guidance on best practices and problem-solving.
- Contribute to the development of internal tools and workflows to improve team efficiency.
- Collaborate across disciplines and with overseas teams to ensure smooth integration of features and systems.
Requirements
- Proven track record of contributing to at least one shipped consumer title, with 5+ years of professional programming experience in game development (lead or ownership experience strongly preferred).
- Experience leading small engineering sub-teams or serving as the point of contact for a major gameplay or systems area.
- Expert Knowledge in C++ and the use of the Unreal Engine
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent or 10 years working in the games industry in any capacity (Required for Japanese VISA)
- An interest in working for a Japanese company with a gaming background
Nice to have
- Demonstrated ability to own major technical systems from design through delivery, including architecture, code quality, and long-term maintainability.
- Experience mentoring junior programmers, conducting code reviews, or contributing to the professional development of peers.
- Comfortable providing technical direction and feedback to non-programming team members (designers, artists, producers).
- Experience breaking down complex tasks, creating estimates, and supporting team scheduling in collaboration with production.
- Proactive, self-directed work ethic and a desire to grow into broader leadership responsibilities over time.
- Experience writing clear internal documentation or tutorials for non-technical team members.
- Familiarity with console platforms and optimization.
- Willingness to learn Japanese or prior experience living/working in Japan or East Asia.
- Experience integrating AI-assisted tools or workflows into game development pipelines, with the ability to identify and suggest practical ways these technologies can supplement existing processes (e.g., prototyping, testing, or pipeline automation).
