Job Description
## About OptQC OptQC is a deep-tech startup spun out of the University of Tokyo, founded with the mission of achieving the social implementation and commercialization of "optical quantum computers." While multiple modalities exist in the quantum computing landscape, we focus on the optical quantum approach. We are confident that this method is the most suitable for practical application and widespread adoption due to its inherent scalability and seamless integration with optical communications. Through continuous research and development, we aim to balance energy efficiency with high computing power, overcome the limits of human information processing, and contribute to a sustainable society. ## Background The Fundamental Unit is conducting core research activity on the generation and measurement of "squeezed light," the fundamental resource for our optical quantum computers. As we move into the next phase of development, it is essential to strengthen our organizational structure to further accelerate the experimental cycle (construction, measurement, evaluation, and improvement). We are looking for a highly motivated junior researcher with great potential. Working on the front lines of experimentation alongside senior scientists, you will be responsible for daily optical alignment and precise data acquisition. Through this hands-on experience, you will absorb the latest quantum optics technologies and grow into an expert who will lead our core technology in the future. ## Key Responsibilities As a member of the Fundamental Unit, you will participate in a research project focused on achieving high-purity free-space squeezed light and high-precision measurements, utilizing a PPLN waveguide as the light source. Squeezed light is the fundamental resource and key to realizing the optical quantum computers we are developing. Under the guidance and review of senior researchers, you will take on practical experimental tasks—such as constructing optical systems and acquiring data—for the development of low-loss squeezed light generation and low-noise homodyne measurements. Example of Specific Responsibilities: - Construct experimental setups for quantum optical systems and adjust optical configurations in collaboration with senior scientists. - Acquire experimental data using measurement instruments such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers, and perform basic data analysis and reporting using Python (or similar tools). - Assist in the selection and procurement of optical elements and components necessary for experiments, and ensure the proper maintenance and management of the experimental environment. - Conduct reviews of prior research and propose experimental plans and improvement ideas through discussions within the team. ## The Role & Impact - Acquisition of World-Class Skills: - Rapidly absorb lifelong professional skills, including advanced optical alignment and data analysis techniques, by working directly under front-line senior researchers. - Direct Contribution to R&D: - Gain a tangible sense of creating new technology as your precise experimental data and improvement proposals are directly applied to the development of next-generation hardware. - Rapid Growth Opportunities: - Thrive in an open-minded culture where your drive and motivation allow you to take on advanced design tasks and propose new research themes early in your career.
Required Qualifications
- Degree: Master’s or Ph.D. in one of the following fields: - Optics: Lasers, nonlinear optics, squeezed light, gravitational-wave interferometers, etc. - Quantum: Quantum information physics, quantum optics, etc. - Research Experience: 2+ years of experience in optical experiments and measurements (including research during a Master's program). - Foundational Skills: - Practical experience handling basic optical elements in free-space or fiber-optic systems. - Experience acquiring and evaluating data using basic measurement instruments (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.). - Basic data analysis skills using Python or similar tools. - Language Skills: English proficiency sufficient for reading technical papers/documents and conducting basic technical communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Foundational knowledge or research experience in nonlinear optics (e.g., PPLN), squeezed light, or continuous-variable (CV) quantum computing. - Experience with homodyne measurements or phase-locking techniques. - Experience writing scientific papers as a first author or presenting at academic conferences. - Conversational proficiency in Japanese.
